CHORAL PERFORMANCES: MCP'S 148TH SEASON "REUNION", LED BY NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DOMINICK DIORIO, BEGAN WITH THE JOYOUS RETURN OF A FEAST OF CAROLS. THIS CONCERT PRESENTED TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY CAROLS ALONGSIDE WORKS BY SEVERAL LIVING COMPOSERS INCLUDING THE WORLD PREMIERE OF A NEW WORK COMISSIONED BY MCP BY KOREAN-AMERICAN COMPOSER TEXU KIM. THIS CONCERT WAS FOLLOWED BY OUR STORY IS NOT OVER FEATURING POET ELIZABETH SCANLON AND GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING BASS-BARITONE DASHON BURTON. ART SONGS AND CHORAL MUSIC WERE INTERWOVEN WITH READINGS BY MS. SCANLON, CULMINATING IN CONVOCATION, A POEM COMMISSIONED BY MCP. THIS CONCERT WAS CONCEIVED AS A RESPONSE TO THE DUAL PANDEMICS RAGING IN OUR WORLD AND WAS A SHIFT FOR MCP IN THAT IT WAS A DIRECT THEMATIC RESPONSE TO CURRENT EVENTS. MCP'S FINAL COCERT WAS THE LONG-AWAITED WORLD PREMIERE OF ANDREA CLEARFIELD'S BEYOND THE BINARY WITH LIBRETTO BY ELLEN FRANKEL, COMMISSIONED BY MCP IN 2019. THIS WORK CELEBRATES THE CENTENNIAL OF THE WORD "ROBOT", AND EXPLORES THE INTERSECTIONS BETWEEN ROBOTICS, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, HUMANITY, AND GENDER. THIS EVENT WAS ENHANCED BY CUSTOM-DESIGNED PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS AN INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH UPENN GRASP LAB AND WEITZMAN SCHOOL OF DESIGN. THIS PERFORMANCE FEATURED DRAG PERFORMING ARTIST COOKIE DIORIO AND PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE SQUARE PEG ROUND ROLE.
