TO EDUCATE ITS MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH THE PRESERVATION ACQUISITION AND DISSEMINATION OF GENEALOGICAL HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL INFORMATION INCLUDING THE MAINTENANCE OF A RESEARCH LIBRARY THE PUBLICATION OF RECORDS AND THE PRESENTATION OF CONFERENCES WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES.

THE SOCIETY MAINTAINS A GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH FACILITY WITH OVER 15,000 BOOKS 11,000 MICROFORMS AND 6,000 PERIODICALS. THE LIBRARY HAS 8 COMPUTER STATIONS WITH INTERNET ACCESS FOR PATRON USE AS WELL AS WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS FOR TO ACCESS ONLINE DATA BASES. THE LIBRARY PAYS FOR AN INSTITUTIONAL SUBSCRIPTION TO ANCESTRY.COM FOR PATRON USE. THE LIBRARY IS AN AFFILIATE OF THE FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY IN SALT LAKE CITY ALLOWING IGS PATRONS ACCESS TO SPECIALIZED RECORD COLLECTIONS. VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE EXPERIENCED RESEARCHERS ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP LIBRARY PATRONS. THE LIBRARY IS OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK FOR A TOTAL OF 46 HOURS PER WEEK.
THE SOCIETY PRESENTED 2 MAJOR CONFERENCES DURING THE YEAR WITH NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SPEAKERS ON VARIOUS TOPICS WITH AN APPROXIMATE TOTAL ATTENDANCE OF 180. THE CONFERENCE AND OTHER CLASSES WERE DONE IN PERSON AND ALSO VIA ZOOM WHICH MADE THEM AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE NOT IN THE DES MOINES AREA. ATTENDANCE INCREASED APPRECIABLY. EACH MONTH THERE ARE FREE BEGINNING GENEALOGY CLASSES AS WELL AS CLASSES ON SPECIALIZED TOPICS WITH AN AVERAGE ATTENDANCE OF 18 PER CLASS. THESE CLASSES ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THERE ARE MONTHLY MEETINGS OF RESEARCHERS INTERESTED IN SPECIFIC NATIONALITIES AND SOFTWARE AS WELL AS DNA RESEARCH AND PUBLISHING. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY ATTENDANCE FOR THE COMBINED MEETINGS WAS 130. A BI-MONTHLY NEWSLETTER AND BI-WEEKLY EMAIL UPDATE ARE SENT TO ALL MEMBERS AS WELL AS OTHER INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS. THE SOCIETY MAINTAINS A FACEBOOK PAGE TO SHARE INFORMATION. A BI-ANNUAL PUBLICATION WITH GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION IS SENT TO ALL MEMBERS. VOLUNTEERS FROM THE SOCIETY TEACH CLASSES AT LOCAL GENEALOGY SOCIETIES AND LIBRARIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE. IN 2022 THE SOCIETY SPONSORED AN OVERNIGHT BUS TRIP FOR MEMBERS TO THE MIDWEST GENEALOGY CENTER IN INDEPENDENCE MISSOURI.
