MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS AND ACCESSIBILITY NEEDS: SPORTS AND RECREATION PROGRAMS INCLUDING LOCAL AND NATIONAL COMPETITIONS IN MOST WHEELCHAIR SPORTS IN THE U.S. INCLUDING BASKETBALL, BOWLING, TRACK AND FIELD, TENNIS, HUNTING, FISHING, SNOW SKIING AND TRAP SHOOTING. PVA ALSO SPONSORS AND FUNDS INDIVIDUAL ACCESSIBILITY IMPROVEMENTS TO MEMBERS' RESIDENCES OR PLACES OF EMPLOYMENT.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS: ADVOCACY IN THE COMMUNITY IS A MAJOR, ONGOING CONCERN. WORKING WITH OTHER VETERAN AND DISABILITY GROUPS HAS INCREASED PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE POTENTIAL OF PARALYZED AND DISABLED PERSONS IN THE WORK PLACE AND IN THE COMMUNITY. THIS ALSO INCLUDES A MENTORING PROCESS TO ASSIST THE NEWLY INJURED SPINAL CORD INDIVIDUAL WHICH ENCOURAGES EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT AND TEACHES SKILLS FOR COPING WITH A NEW DISABILITY.
