THE MISSION OF THE NYCSHS IS TO PERPETUATE THE LEGACY OF THE NEW YORK CENTRAL SYSTEM BY ACQUIRING AND PRESERVING ITS HISTORY, TRADITIONS, DOCUMENTS, AND ARTIFACTS: AND BY DISSEMINATING ACCURATE INFORMATION AND PRODUCTS CONSISTENT WITH GOOD STEWARDSHIP.

THE NYCSHS ARCHIVES IS OPEN TO ANYONE WISHING TO EXPLORE THE VAST HISTORY OF THE NEW YORK CENTRAL'S RAILROADS. USING THE RESOURCES IN THE ARCHIVES, THE SOCIETY PUBLISHES BOOKS, DVDS, FLASH DRIVES, PHOTOS, AND OTHER MATERIAL COVERING ALL ASPECTS OF THE NYCS'S OPERATIONS. THE FACILITY HAS ALLOWED US TO CONSOLIDATE ALL OF OUR ARCHIVE MATERIAL INTO ORGANIZED FILES AND HAS MADE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR RESEARCH AND DISTRIBUTION. WE HAVE UPGRADE OUR I.T. SYSTEM TO ALLOW DIGITAL ACCESS TO MUCH OF OUR MATERIAL AND HAVE ACQUIRED CLOUD BACKUP TO ENSURE COMPLETE REDUNDANT ACCESS. OUR LATEST CAPABILITY INCLUDES THE ABILITY FOR MEMBERS AND NON MEMBERS TO SEARCH OUR COMPLETE COLLECTION OF DIGITAL IMAGES AND ORDER THEM FROM OUR ARCHIVE DIGITAL SHOP. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF ADDING MAPS AND OTHER MATERIAL TO THAT CAPABILITY
WE PUBLISH A QUARTERLY MAGAZINE ON THE HISTORY OF THE NYCS RAILROADS. THE "CENTRAL HEADLIGHT" PROVIDES US A WAY TO SHARE THE RAILROAD'S HISTORY TO OUR MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC. IT IS A HIGH QUALITY 40-48 PAGE COLOR PUBLICATION CONTAINING ARTICLES AND PHOTOS ON THE HISTORY OF THE NYCS. WE ALSO PUBLISH A QUARTERLY 100-125 PAGE ONLINE MAGAZINE, "NY CENTRAL MODELER", TO SHOWCASE NYCSHS MEMBERS MODELING OF THE NYCS.WE PUBLISHED ONE HARD COVER BOOK IN THE PAST YEAR ABOUT THE NYCS HISTORY,"KNOW THY LATE MOHAWKS". WE SUPPORTED SEVERAL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TECHNICAL HELP AND IMAGES IN THE PUBLICATION OF NYCS RELATED BOOKS. WE ALSO SUPPORTED SEVERAL MINORITY ORGANIZATIONS WHO WERE SEEKING TECHNICAL AND IMAGERY SUPPORT FOR VIDEOS AND BOOKS. THE ARCHIVE VOLUNTEERS ACQUIRED AND PROCESSED HUGE COLLECTIONS FROM MEMBER ESTATES, THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, MEMBER AND NON MEMBER COLLECTIONS DONATIONS. WE PROVIDED TECHNICAL AND IMAGE SUPPORT TO SEVERAL AUTHORS, LOCAL HISTORICAL SOCIETIES AND PUBLIC LIBRARIES FOR LOCAL RAILROAD DISPLAYS
THE SOCIETY PROVIDES AN EXTENSIVE NETWORK OF ONLINE NYCS EXPERTS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NYCS. THIS IS DONE THROUGH GROUPS IO, FACEBOOK PAGES, A NYCSHS WEBSITE, AND VIA INTERNET CONNECTIVITY.
