PENNSYLVANIA TRAUMA SYSTEMS FOUNDATION (THE "FOUNDATION") WAS ORGANIZED TO DEVELOP A VOLUNTARY ACCREDITATION PROGRAM FOR TRAUMA CENTERS IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA. THE COMMONWEALTH'S MEDICAL SERVICES ACT, WHICH WAS SIGNED INTO LAW IN 1985, RECOGNIZED THE FOUNDATION AND ESTABLISHED ITS MANDATE. THE FOUNDATION HAS DEVELOPED STANDARDS FOR OPERATION OF TRAUMA CENTERS IN PENNSYLVANIA, NOW KNOWN AS THE STANDARDS FOR TRAUMA CENTER ACCREDITATION (THE "STANDARDS"). IN ADDITION, THE FOUNDATION USES THESE STANDARDS TO EVALUATE PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITALS, WHICH APPLY TO THE FOUNDATION TO DETERMINE IF THEY MEET THE STANDARDS. THE FOUNDATION ALSO CONDUCTS SITE SURVEY VISITS USING INDEPENDENT SURVEY TEAMS TO DETERMINE IF APPLICANT HOSPITALS MEET THE STANDARDS, AND MAINTAINS AN APPEALS MECHANISM TO REEVALUATE ACCREDITATION DECISIONS. THE FOUNDATION ALSO CONDUCTS EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS AND MAINTAINS A STATE-WIDE TRAUMA REGISTRY, NOW KNOWN AS THE PENNSYLVANIA TRAUMA OUTCOME STUDY.
