TEACH KENTUCKY IS A SELECTIVE TEACHER RECRUITMENT PROGRAM ATTRACTING MOTIVATED YOUNG PEOPLE TO TEACH IN KENTUCKY'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS, ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION FOR OUR STUDENTS AND ENRICHING OUR CIVIC LIFE BY RETAINING THESE BRIGHT YOUNG MINDS IN THE REGION. BASED IN LOUISVILLE, KY, A VIBRANT, FORWARD-THINKING CITY WITH A RICH HISTORY, TEACH KENTUCKY PLACES THE MAJORITY OF ITS TEACHERS WITHIN OUR METROPOLITAN AREA.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

TEACH KENTUCKY RECRUITS INDIVIDUALS TO LAUNCH THEIR EDUCATION CAREERS IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. IT LEVERAGES FINANCIAL INCENTIVES ACQUIRED THROUGH ITS STRATEGIC FUNDRAISING EFFORTS TO ATTRACT RECENT COLLEGE GRADUATES FROM ACROSS THE NATION. PARTICIPANTS SERVE IN KENTUCKY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND EARN AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE MASTERS DEGREE WHILE TEACHING FULL-TIME. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, TEACH KENTUCKY HAS RECRUITED 450 INDIVIDUALS REPRESENTING OVER 180 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. EIGHTY PERCENT (80%) OF THESE INDIVIDUALS ARE FROM OUTSIDE THE STATE OF KENTUCKY. 330 OF THESE INDIVIDUALS REMAIN IN THE EDUCATION PROFESSION EITHER IN KENTUCKY OR ELSEWHERE. OF THE 225 EDUCATORS CURRENTLY RESIDING AND WORKING IN KENTUCKY, 70 PERCENT OF THEM WORK IN HIGH-POVERTY, LOW PERFORMING SCHOOLS.

TEACH KENTUCKY PROVIDES A SEVEN-WEEK TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM THAT COMPLEMENTS GRADUATE SCHOOL COURSES IN ORDER TO BETTER EQUIP ITS NEW RECRUITS FOR THE CLASSROOM AND INCREASE RETENTION OF ITS RECRUITS IN THE PROFESSION LONG-TERM. THIS PROGRAM IS RUN BY VETERAN EDUCATORS WHO ARE ALUMNI OF THE TEACH KENTUCKY PROGRAM. THIS STRUCTURE AIDS IN THE FORMATION OF CROSS-GENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS NEW AND OLD, PROMOTING KNOWLEDGE-SHARING, ONGOING COLLABORATION, AND A STRONG FOUNDATION OF SUPPORT. ADDITIONALLY, TEACH KENTUCKY PARTNERS WITH LOCAL MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE REALISTIC INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSROOM EXPERIENCES WITH STUDENTS PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. VETERAN TEACHERS OBSERVE NEW RECRUITS AND PROVIDE THEM WITH CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK AND MODELING.

TEACH KENTUCKY CREATES A TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY OF ONGOING SUPPORT TO ITS RECRUITS AS THEY ADJUST TO THEIR NEW CAREERS AND NEW LIVES IN LOUISVILLE. IN SURVEYS ADMINISTERED TO OUR EDUCATORS, THIS ASPECT OF THE PROGRAM POSITIVELY DIFFERENTIATES TEACH KENTUCKY THE MOST FROM OTHER TEACHER RECRUITMENT OPTIONS. TEACH KENTUCKY CONSIDERS THESE NETWORKS AND SUPPORT TO BE A CRUCIAL CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO ITS 70 PERCENT (70%) RETENTION RATE OF INDIVIDUALS WHO BEGIN THEIR THIRD YEARS AS TEACHERS RECRUITED THROUGH THE PROGRAM.
