MAPS HELPS YOUNG PEOPLE VIEW THEIR LIVES THROUGH A LENS OF POSSIBILITY - ENGAGING WITH THEIR COMMUNITIES AS SUPPORTIVE CITIZENS, WHILE LEARNING RELEVANT COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND EXPERIENCING "REAL WORLD" OPPORTUNITIES.

PART LLL, 4A: RAVALLI, LEWIS & CLARK, AND ONLINE AFTERSCHOOL & SUMMER PROGRAMS ESTABLISHED IN 2004 IN THE BITTERROOT VALLEY, MAPS TAUGHT FILMMAKING TO 20 STUDENTS IN ITS INAUGURAL YEAR. SINCE THEN, MAPS HAS EXPANDED TO A YEAR-ROUND MEDIA ARTS INSTITUTE WORKING WITH HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS FROM DOZENS OF SCHOOLS STATEWIDE. ALL OF OUR PROGRAMMING IS 100% FREE-OF-CHARGE TO ALL 8TH - 12TH STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. MAPS ONLINE PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC. FROM JAN - MAY 2021, MAPS AFTERSCHOOL MEDIA ARTS CLASSES WERE CONDUCTED VIA AN ONLINE LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. ENROLLED STUDENTS RECEIVED ALL THE EQUIPMENT NECESSARY TO PARTICIPATE REMOTELY (IPADS, APPLE PENCILS, PORTABLE PRODUCTION STUDIOS, SOFTWARE, INTERNET HOTSPOTS, ETC. PROGRAMMING RETURNED TO IN PERSON IN JUNE 2021. MAPS-RAVALLI COUNTY PROGRAM (EST. 2004) OCCUPIES A 5000 SQUARE FOOT STUDIO IN HAMILTON, MT. STUDENTS FROM FIVE PARTNER SCHOOL DISTRICTS, THE HOME SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS ATTEND OUR 32-WK. AFTERSCHOOL AND 6 WK. SUMMER PROGRAM. MAPS-LEWIS & CLARK COUNTY (EST. 2019) OCCUPIES A 2,000 SQUARE FOOT STUDIO IN HELENA, MT. STUDENTS FROM TWO PARTNER SCHOOL DISTRICTS, THE HOME SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS ATTEND OUR 32-WK. AFTERSCHOOL AND 6 WK. SUMMER PROGRAM. DYNAMIC STEAM BASED CURRICULUMS WITH TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED LEARNING ARE FACILITATED BY PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTORS IN FILM, DESIGN, MUSIC, NEW TECH, PHOTOJOURNALISM, PODCASTS, AND FUTURE READINESS. WE ALSO TEACH STUDENTS HOW THESE SKILLS APPLY TO ANY CAREER PATHWAY. THIS COMBINATION HELPS PREPARE MONTANA STUDENTS TO BE MORE "FUTURE READY- AND FIND SUCCESS IN THEIR LOCAL EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT THAT BOTH ENCOMPASSES AND GOES BEYOND CAREER- READINESS. OUR PROJECT-BASED MODEL OF IMMERSIVE EDUCATION PROVIDES UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THESE "FUTURE READY" SKILLS.
PART LLL, 4D: THROUGH CLIENT BASED PROJECTS MAPS PROVIDES REAL WORLD LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR MAPS STUDENTS TO SHARE THEIR SKILLS AND CREATIVE TALENTS ON MEDIA PROJECTS FOR NONPROFITS AND SMALL BUSINESSES THAT WORK TO MAKE MONTANA HEALTHIER, STRONGER, AND CONNECTED. CLIENT EXAMPLES INCLUDE THE BITTERROOT LAND TRUST, RAVALLI COUNTY COUNCIL ON AGING, MONTANA SPECIAL OLYMPICS, AND VALLEY VETERANS.
PART LLL, 4B: THIS IS MAPS STATEWIDE EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM, SERVING YOUTH WITHIN MONTANA'S FIRST NATIONS AND SURROUNDING RURAL COMMUNITIES. IN THIS PROGRAM, MAPS PROFESSIONAL ARTIST-EDUCATORS TRAVEL TO RURAL AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES AND FACILITATE INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY MEDIA ARTS WORKSHOPS WITH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THROUGH THESE HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS, STUDENTS DEVELOP THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO PLAN AND PRODUCE A VARIETY OF MEDIA ARTS PROJECTS AS THEY COLLABORATE WITH PROFESSIONAL, COMPASSIONATE TEACHING ARTISTS USING STATE-OF-THE ART EQUIPMENT. STUDENTS CREATE A VARIETY OF MEDIA PROJECTS (EG: FILMS, PODCASTS, PHOTOJOURNALISM ESSAYS, ETC) THAT REFLECT THEIR INTERESTS, CURRENT EXPERIENCES, AND THOSE OF THEIR COMMUNITY. THEY SHARE FULLY ORIGINAL WORK WITH FRIENDS, FAMILIES AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH VARIOUS CULMINATING EVENTS: ONLINE SCREENINGS, SOCIAL MEDIA, PUBLIC BROADCASTING, AND AT REGIONAL FILM FESTIVALS, VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON.
PART LLL, 4C: MAPS-FLATHEAD RESERVATION/LAKE COUNTY: 2022 WAS THE 5TH YEAR OF THIS MAPS "SEASONAL AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM" THAT RUNS FOR 6-13 WEEKS EVERY SPRING. RONAN COMMUNITY CENTER IN RONAN, MT WAS THE SITE HOST FOR THE 2022 PROGRAM. STUDENTS SERVED WERE 8 - 12 GRADE STUDENTS FROM HOMESCHOOL, PRIVATE AND 4 SCHOOL DISTRICTS. PROGRAM RAN 2 DAYS A WEEK AFTERSCHOOL FOR SIX CONSECUTIVE WEEKS. CLASS CONTENT WAS MUSIC VIDEO PRODUCTION.
