Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

THE FOUNDATION (BSFRF) ACTIVITIES DURING 2023 WERE FOCUSED ON ONE PRIMARY FIELD PROJECT AND ACQUIRING SMART TAGS FOR A SECONDARY CRAB-TAGGING PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NOAA. THE PRIMARY FIELD PROJECT OCCURRED IN MARCH-APRIL 2023 IN COLLABORATION WITH BOTH NOAA FISHERIES AND THE ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME (ADFG). THE FOUNDATION CHARTERED TWO FISHING VESSELS (THE FV SUMMER BAY AND THE FV SILVER SPRAY) TO COMPLETE A WINTER-SPRING RED KING CRAB POT SURVEY IN BRISTOL BAY AK. THE PROJECT WAS THE FIRST IN A SEQUENCE OF COLLABORATIVE POT SAMPLING (CPS1) PROJECTS THAT FOCUSED A SEASONAL DISTRIBUTION SURVEY OF BRISTOL BAY RED KING CRAB IN THE LATE WINTER. THE PROJECT PLACED SUBCONTRACTORS FROM BSFRF ALONG WITH PERSONNEL FROM NOAA AND ADF&G ONBOARD THE CHARTERS AS SCIENTIFIC PARTIES TO COMPLETE THE RESEARCH. THE PROJECT ADDRESSED A PRIMARY RESEARCH PRIORITY OF COLLECTING MORE INFORMATION ON THE WINTER-SPRING DISTRIBUTION OF RED KING CRAB IN BRISTOL BAY TO REVIEW THE EFFICACY OF CURRENT SPATIAL CONSERVATION MEASURES.

THE FOUNDATION PURCHASED APPROXIMATELY $195,000 OF SMART-TECHNOLOGY TAGS TO BE SHARED WITH NOAA SCIENTISTS FOR PLACEMENT ON BRISTOL BAY RED KING CRAB DURING THE BERING SEA NOAA SUMMER SURVEY (JUN- AUG, 2023). THESE TAGS WERE PURCHASED FROM WILDLIFE COMPUTERS BY BSFRF, AND SHIPPED TO NOAA KODIAK SCIENTISTS PRIOR TO THE NMFS SURVEY. THE PLACEMENT OF THE TAGS OCCURRED SUCCESSFULLY DURING THE NOAA SURVEY. THIS PROJECT WAS ALSO A HIGH PRIORITY RESEARCH ITEM AND WAS PART OF ONGOING RESEARCH TO ADDRESS RED KING CRAB MOVEMENT AND SEASONAL DISTRIBUTION IN BRISTOL BAY.

THE BSFRF SCIENCE ADVISORY TEAM (SCIENCE TEAM) PARTICIPATED IN A NUMBER OF USUAL, OTHER ACTIVITIES DURING 2023 WHICH INCLUDED: THE JANUARY, MAY AND SEPTEMBER CRAB PLAN TEAM MEETINGS OF THE NORTH PACIFIC FISHERIES MANAGEMENT COUNCIL (NPFMC, IN SEATTLE AND AK), THE ALASKA MARINE SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM (AMSS, JANUARY IN ANCHORAGE), AND THE BERING SEA CRAB SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM (SEATTLE).
