Part 3 - Line 4a
EPILEPSY AWARENESS AND EDUCATION: ESSENTIAL TO THE MISSION OF THE MATTY FUND ARE PROGRAMS THAT EDUCATE AND RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE REALITIES OF EPILEPSY, TEACH SEIZURE PROTOCOLS, AND PROMOTE PATIENT SAFETY. THESE PROGRAMS HELP TO REMOVE THE STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH EPILEPSY AND SEIZURES TO ENCOURAGE A SAFE, PRODUCTIVE, AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN LIVING WITH THIS CONDITION AT SCHOOL, HOME, AND PLAY. RAISING EPILEPSY AWARENESS IS A CORE ELEMENT INCLUDED IN THE PLANNING AND DELIVERY OF EVERY PROGRAM AND EVENT. THE MATTY FUND ALSO DESIGNS PROGRAMS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF MEDICAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROFESSIONALS.
CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SUPPORT AND ACTIVITIES: THE MATTY FUND WAS BUILT ON SEVERAL GUIDING PRINCIPLES. ONE, TO HELP PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS COPE WITH CHILDREN SUFFERING WITH SEIZURES AND THE SIDE EFFECTS OF STRONG MEDICATIONS. TWO, TO OFFER PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN LIVING WITH EPILEPSY THAT ARE FUN, SAFE, AND INCLUSIVE. THE MATTY FUND'S EPILEPSY RESOURCE CENTER FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN RHODE ISLAND, OFFERS THIS SUPPORT AND OUTREACH TO FAMILIES THROUGHOUT RHODE ISLAND AND BEYOND. THE RESOURCE CENTER OFFERS INFORMATION, ADVOCACY, AND EDUCATION IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. THE "DISCOVERING MY EPILEPSY SUPPORT GROUP" BRINGS PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS TOGETHER, BOTH IN-PERSON AND ELECTRONICALLY, TO SUPPORT AND LEARN FROM OTHERS WHO SHARE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES. PARTICIPANTS HELP EACH OTHER NAVIGATE COMPLEX MEDICAL, EDUCATION, AND SOCIAL SYSTEMS ON BEHALF OF THEIR CHILDREN; EDUCATE EACH OTHER ON POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS TO SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL ISSUES RELATED TO EPILEPSY; AND CONNECT TO LOCAL, STATE, AND PRIVATE RESOURCES, AND PARTICIPATE IN CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES.
RESEARCH INITIATIVES: IN 2015, THE MATTY FUND AWARDED THE MATTHEW SIRAVO UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS IN EPILEPSY RESEARCH AT THE BROWN UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE FOR BRAIN SCIENCE. THIS AWARD ENCOURAGES WORK TOWARDS IMPROVING THE DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF EPILEPSY.
