EXPLORE MORE DISCOVERY MUSEUM OFFERS PLAY-BASED, HANDS-ON LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR YOUTH THROUGH MUSEUM EXHIBITS, PROGRAMMING, FIELD TRIPS SPECIAL EVENTS

PROGRAMMING, OUTREACH, MUSEUM EXPLORATION A POST-PANDEMIC FOCUS OF THE MUSEUM HAS BEEN TO EXPAND PROGRAM EXPERIENCES FOR OLDER YOUTH, AGES 8 AND UP. NEW OFFERINGS INCLUDE AFTER-SCHOOL COOKING CLASSES, MAKERSPACE WORKSHOPS, AND A SUMMER INTERN PROGRAM FOR AGES 13-15, DESIGNED TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP TRAINING, WHILE ENHANCING THE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE. A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HARRISONBURG-ROCKINGHAM BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB PROVIDED TWO MUSEUM FIELD TRIPS FOR 400 STUDENTS AS AS REVERSE FIELD TRIPS, BRINGING HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES DIRECTLY TO CLUB SITES. STEAM KITS WERE ALSO DISTRIBUTED TO PROVIDE HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES DURING SCHOOL BREAKS. THIS WAS FUNDED THROUGH A MERCK NEIGHBORHOOD GRANT. COLLABORATIONS ARE CRITICAL TO THE MUSEUMS EFFORTS TO ENSURE ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSIVITY. IN 2022, THE MUSEUM OFFERED PROGRAMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SHENANDOAH VALLEY CHILDRENS CHOIR, JMUKES, YES, AND THE JMU DIETETICS PROGRAM.


EXHIBIT/CAPITAL EXPANSION THE MUSEUM FEATURES 16 EXHIBIT GALLERIES, PLUS A MAKERSPACE AND TEACHING KITCHEN TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN THROUGH PLAY AND AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES. THE EXHIBITS ARE ALSO THE INSPIRATION FOR MUSEUM ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS. WITH THOUSANDS OF VISITORS EACH YEAR, REPAIR AND REFURBISHMENT OF ALL EXHIBIT AREAS IS ESSENTIAL. IN 2022, THE CASH FLOW FINANCIAL LITERACY EXHIBIT WAS COMPLETED. AN ENGAGING BALL MAZE AND INDIVIDUAL LEARNING KIOSKS TEACH CHILDREN THE CONCEPTS OF EARNING, SPENDING, SAVING, INVESTING, AND SHARING. IN 2022, THE MUSEUM HELD ITS FIFTH ANNUAL RUN THE RUNWAY 5K FUNDRAISER, TO RAISE FUNDS FOR AVIATION EDUCATION. TO ENSURE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF QUALITY PLAY, THE MUSEUM REGULARLY EVALUATES, UPDATES, AND MAINTAINS EXHIBIT AND FACILITY SPACES. STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN FUNDING, MAINTAINING, AND SUPERVISING EXHIBIT EXPERIENCES.
