RURAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE:AN INITIATIVE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES FACING RURAL COMMUNITIES IN ADDRESSING POVERTY IN A CULTURALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE MANNER. INCLUDES RESEARCH, CONVENING, AND PRACTICAL COMPONENTS, WITH THE EXPECTED OUTCOME BEING AN ACTION PLAN TO BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS INCLUDING FUNDERS, AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES
COVID RESPONSE:CASSIOPEIA EXPANDED ITS GRANTMAKING STRATEGY IN MARCH 2020 TO SUPPORT THE IMMINENT AND EMERGING NEEDS OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA AS A RESULT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THIS STRATEGY PROVIDED LOCAL NONPROFITS WITH THE RESOURCES THEY NEEDED TO RESPOND TO THE UNPRECEDENTED NEEDS OF A COMMUNITY IN THE MIDST OF A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS WITH CATASTROPHIC EFFECTS ON THE LOCAL ECONOMY. GRANTS WERE MADE TO A RANGE OF SOCIAL SAFETY NET ORGANIZATIONS TO DEVELOP NEW PATHWAYS FOR SERVICE DELIVERY TO ENSURE AND EXPAND ACCESS TO PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, TO COMBAT RISING FOOD INSECURITY THROUGH INCREASED COORDINATION AMONG SERVICE PROVIDERS AND INCREASE THE AVAILABILITY OF LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED, TO AUGMENT THE LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S BILINGUAL EDUCATIONAL & OUTREACH TEAM, TO FACILITATE FREE MOBILE COVID TESTING AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF MASKS IN HIGH RISK COMMUNITIES, AND TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF MULTI-MEDIA COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES TO INCREASE AWARENESS
