CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF STATEN ISLAND, INC., FOR THE PROTECTION OF HOMELESS AND DESTITUTE CHILDREN'S MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES ARE INFANT AND PRE-SCHOOL DAY CARE, RESIDENTIAL AND OTHER PROGRAMS FOR DEVELOPMENTALLY CHALLENGED YOUTH, SOCIAL SERVICES TO FAMILIES IN CRISIS AND TO ENHANCE RELATIONSHIPS AND ASSISTANCE TO SENIOR CITIZENS WITHIN STATEN ISLAND COMMUNITY.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF STATEN ISLAND PROVIDES SUPPORT TO 36 INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES. WE CURRENTLY OPERATE 6 RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES LOCATED ON STATEN ISLAND. THE INDIVIDUALIZED RESIDENTIAL ALTERNATIVES (IRA'S) PROGRAMS ARE TRADITIONAL FAMILY-STYLE HOMES, PROVIDING 24-HOUR STAFF, SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION. THE IRA PROGRAMS REFLECT A STRONG PERSON-CENTERED AND ACTIVITY-BASED MODEL. THE PROGRAM OFFERS A HOME FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL, A SAFE AND A SUPPORTED ENVIRONMENT. AS AN ORGANIZATION, CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF STATEN ISLAND MAKES EVERY EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE EACH PERSON TO BE A VALUABLE MEMBER OF SOCIETY. WE PROMOTE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION, VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES, AND INDEPENDENCE BASED ON INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCES AND CHOICES.


CATHOLIC CHARITIES OPERATE A 12-BED INTERMEDIATE CARE FACILITY (ICF) UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE OFFICE FOR PEOPLE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY (OPWDD). THE ICF PROVIDES INTENSIVE MEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT FOR THE 12 INDIVIDUALS AS WELL AS PERSONAL CARE AND HABILITATION, SPECIALIZED THERAPIES, AND ACTIVE TREATMENT SERVICES.


DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM:CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF STATEN ISLAND PROVIDES GROUP DAY HABILITATION (WITHOUT WALLS) SERVICES TO ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. OUR TRAINED DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS TEACH EACH INDIVIDUAL THE SKILLS NEEDED TO ASSIST WITH TRANSITIONING INTO EMPLOYMENT AND GAINING INDEPENDENCE. CCSI'S GROUP DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM OFFERS VARIOUS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE COMMUNITY, SUCH AS MEALS ON WHEELS, NY PUBLIC LIBRARY, NY CARES, COMFORT INN HOTEL, SEAVIEW REHABILITATION CENTER, AND CYO CONCESSION STANDS, AND SMP AUTO. OUR GOAL AT CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF STATEN ISLAND IS TO ENHANCE THE LIVES OF EACH INDIVIDUAL, ASSIST THEM WITH INCREASING THEIR INDEPENDENCE, AND PREPARE THEM FOR FUTURE EMPLOYMENT.


UNDER THE AUSPICES OF CATHOLIC CHARITES OF STATEN ISLAND, CATHOLIC YOUTH ORGANIZATION (CYO) PROVIDES A VARIETY OF ORGANIZED SPORTS, SCOUTING, AND YOUTH INITIATIVES ON STATEN ISLAND WITH 30 PARISHES. THESE PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO FOSTER THE SPIRITUAL, CULTURAL, AND PERSONAL GROWTH OF EACH PERSON WHILE DRAWING THEM TO RESPONSIBLE PARTICIPATION IN THE LIFE, MISSION, AND WORK OF THE PARISH COMMUNITY. WHILE THE LARGEST NUMBER OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE ATHLETIC INCLUDING BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL, CHEERLEADING, TRACK, AND CROSS COUNTRY, THEY ALSO INCLUDE ART AND ESSAY CONTESTS.THE CASE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM OF CCSI HELPS INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND SENIOR CITIZENS TO SECURE OR SUSTAIN BASIC LIFE NECESSITIES SUCH AS HOUSING, FOOD, HEAT/ELECTRICITY, HEALTH CARE, ETC. MEASURABLE RESULTS INCLUDED: ASSISTING 484 INDIVIDUALS WITH INFORMATION AND REFERRALS; 71 INDIVIDUALS WITH STABILIZING AND/OR SECURING AFFORDABLE HOUSING; 73 SENIORS WITH OBTAINING BENEFITS AND RESOURCES TO HELP MAINTAIN A STABLE AND INDEPENDENT HOME ENVIRONMENT; 71 FAMILIES WITH OBTAINING BENEFITS AND RESOURCES TO HELP MAINTAIN A STABLE AND INDEPENDENT HOME ENVIRONMENT; $40,000 IN RELIEF PROVIDED TO NEEDY FAMILIES FOR EVICTION PREVENTION, UTILITY STABILIZATION AND ESSENTIAL FURNITURE.OUR SUPPLEMENTAL DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM PROVIDES WEEKDAY SERVICES TO CHILDREN, AGES 7 AND UP, WHO ARE DIAGNOSED WITH VARIOUS FUNCTIONAL ABILITIES AS CONSEQUENCES OF AUTISM, CEREBRAL PALSY, AND DOWNS SYNDROME. THE VARIOUS SERVICES PROVIDED ARE OF NO COST TO THE FAMILIES. WE PROVIDE THE FAMILIES PEACE OF MIND KNOWING THEIR CHILD IS LEARNING THE SKILLS NEEDED TO BECOME AS INDEPENDENT AS POSSIBLE AND IN A SAFE AND LOVING ENVIRONMENT. THESE SERVICES INCLUDE MULTIPLE SOCIAL, EDUCATIONAL, PHYSICAL, AND RESIDENTIAL COMPONENTS. THE PROGRAM MEETS THE NEEDS OF EACH CHILD AS IDENTIFIED BY THE PARENTS, SCHOOLS, CLINICAL DATA, AND CHILDREN THEMSELVES. THIS INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO ASSISTANCE WITH HOMEWORK, ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, AND VOCATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING, ADL SKILLS, AND CLINICAL INTERVENTION. WE WELCOME AND SUPPORT ALL CHILDREN WITH VARIOUS TYPES OF DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, AND CONSIDER IT AN HONOR TO WORK WITH THEM.SEMP: INDIVIDUALS ATTEND EACH WEEK AND ARE PROVIDED WORK EXPERIENCES GEARED TOWARD THEIR AREAS OF INTEREST AND ALLOWING THEM AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MEANINGFUL, PAID EMPLOYMENT. THIS PROGRAM PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN INCREASING THEIR SELF-ESTEEM AND RECOGNIZING THEIR ABILITIES. CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF STATEN ISLAND, INC. TENDER CARE PRE-SCHOOL IS FOR CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 2 AND 4 YEARS OLD. IT IS STAFFED BY HIGHLY QUALIFIED EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIALISTS AND ACCREDITED BY NEW YORK CITY. CHILDREN AGES 3 QUALIFY FOR 3K AND CHILDREN AGES 4 QUALIFY FOR UNIVERSAL PRE- KINDERGARTEN, BOTH PROGRAMS ARE FUNDED BY THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AT NO COST TO FAMILIES. THE PROGRAM SERVED 63 CHILDREN DURING THE PAST YEAR. OUR 3K AND PRE- K PROGRAMS FOCUS ON DEVELOPING THE CHILD'S ABILITY TO WORK WITH OTHERS AND TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. EACH CHILD IS TAUGHT HOW TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY AND TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY AS WELL AS IN A GROUP SETTING. OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE CHILDREN WITH AN ARRAY OF ACTIVITIES THAT FURTHER SUPPORT AND EXPAND THEIR OUTLOOK IN PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT EDUCATIONAL SETTING. THE VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM SEEKS TO DEVELOP COMPETITIVE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE COMMUNITY FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES UTILIZING ACCESS VR AND SUPPORTIVE EMPLOYMENT SERVICES THROUGH SEMP AND PATHWAY TO EMPLOYMENT. JOB TRAINING AND COACHING, ASSESSMENT OF VOCATIONAL SKILLS, SUCH AS BUT NOT LIMITED TO: WORK TOLERANCE LEVELS, SOCIAL SKILLS IN THE WORK SETTING, WORK BEHAVIORS, EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION, ACCEPTING SUPERVISION, PROBLEM-SOLVING ARE PROVIDED. THERE ARE 5 INDIVIDUALS ENROLLED IN SEMP AND 2 INDIVIDUALS IN THE PATHWAY TO EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM.SUPPLEMENTAL DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM (AFTER SCHOOL): OPTS/ SUPPLEMENTAL DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM PROVIDES VARIOUS AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES BASED ON EACH CHILD'S NEEDS. THE PROGRAM IS APPROVED BY OPWDD.THE CASE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM OF CCSI HELPS INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND SENIOR CITIZENS TO MAINTAIN BASIC LIFE NECESSITIES SUCH AS HOUSING, FOOD, HEAT/ELECTRICITY, HEALTH-RELATED NEEDS, ETC. OUR SERVICES ARE BROAD, BUT WE FOCUS ON EVICTION PREVENTION/HOUSING STABILIZATION, UTILITY STABILIZATION, EMERGENCY FOOD RESOURCES, AND ACCESS TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE RECOVERY SERVICES. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS BY: ADVOCATING FOR CLIENTS PROVIDING INFORMATION & MAKING REFERRALS HELPING TO UNDERSTAND AND NAVIGATE THE COMPLEX SYSTEM OF PUBLIC BENEFITS HELPING TO COMPLETE APPLICATIONS PROVIDING EMERGENCY FOOD APPLYING FOR RELIEF GRANTSCCSI OPERATES TWO NYC DEPARTMENT FOR THE AGING CONTRACTED NEIGHBORHOOD SENIOR CENTERS ON STATEN ISLAND - ANDERSON NEIGHBORHOOD SENIOR CENTER AND WEST BRIGHTON NEIGHBORHOOD SENIOR CENTER. THE PROGRAMS PROVIDE NUTRITIOUS MEALS AND A VARIETY OF HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND CREATIVE PROGRAMS TO STATEN ISLANDERS AGE 60+. THE CCSI NEIGHBORHOOD SENIOR CENTERS ARE LIVELY AND UPLIFTING SOCIAL CENTERS THAT ENHANCE THE LIVES OF SENIORS BY PROMOTING HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND INDEPENDENCE. THE SERVICE OFFERED IN THE SENIOR CENTERS INCLUDES CONGREGATE MEALS, PHYSICAL HEALTH/EXERCISE, NUTRITION EDUCATION, HEALTH MANAGEMENT, ARTS/CULTURE ACTIVITIES, TECHNOLOGY, GENERAL EDUCATION/RECREATION PROGRAMS, SOCIAL SERVICE CASE ASSISTANCE, INFORMATION & REFERRALS, AND TRANSPORTATION.
