NORTHSIDE CENTER FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT DAY SCHOOL (THE "SCHOOL") SERVES FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGES ZERO TO EIGHT: AT THEIR HOMES; AT OUR DAY SCHOOL AT OUR MAIN SITE ON 108TH STREET; AT OUR SUSAN PATRICOF HEAD START CENTER ON EAST 111TH STREET; AND AT PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. NORTHSIDE OFFERS EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION INITIATIVES TO PROMOTE NURTURING ENVIRONMENTS WHERE TYPICALLY DEVELOPING AND SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN GROW IN THEIR COGNITIVE, SOCIAL, LITERACY AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. NORTHSIDE CENTER'S EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM INVOLVES A CLOSE COLLABORATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN PARENTS, SERVICE COORDINATORS, EVALUATORS, AND THE NEW YORK CITY EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM TO DEVELOP INDIVIDUALIZED FAMILY SERVICE PLANS OUTLINING THE COMBINATION OF SOCIAL WORK, SPEECH, OCCUPATIONAL, PHYSICAL THERAPIES, SPECIAL INSTRUCTION (GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL) AND FAMILY TRAINING THAT WILL BE PROVIDED OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. NORTHSIDE ALSO OFFERS APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS TREATMENT (ABA) FOR CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM. THEY HAVE MULTI-LINGUAL/MULTI-CULTURAL EARLY INTERVENTION SERVICE COORDINATORS, WHICH ALLOWS US TO HELP MORE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN A GEOGRAPHIC AREA WHERE MANY RESIDENTS ARE NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING OR FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS NOT THEIR PRIMARY LANGUAGE. SERVICES ARE PROVIDED IN THE HOME AND IN THE CENTER. ELIGIBILITY CAN ONLY BE DETERMINED BY STATE APPROVED EVALUATORS UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND MENTAL HYGIENE. ONE OF THE PROGRAM'S MAJOR OBJECTIVES IS TO TEACH FAMILIES HOW TO USE EVERY DAY ROUTINES TO ASSIST THEIR CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT. JUNE 30, 2021, NORTHSIDE SERVED 259 CHILDREN IN OUR EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM. THE GOAL OF THE PRE-K PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE INTENSIVE INDIVIDUALIZED INTERVENTIONS WHICH COMBINE CLINICAL AND EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN AGES 2.5 THROUGH 5 YEARS OF AGE. THESE CHILDREN EXHIBIT EMOTIONAL DIFFICULTIES, LANGUAGE DISORDERS, LEARNING DISABILITIES AND/OR MILD NEUROLOGICAL IMPAIRMENT. THE EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSROOMS WITH HIGH STAFF TO CHILD RATIOS OFFER A SUPPORTIVE AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT. EACH CLASS HAS A CERTIFIED SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER AND TWO ASSISTANTS. THE CURRICULUM FOCUSES ON LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AS WELL AS OTHER SCHOOL READINESS SKILLS INCLUDING PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT. SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY, OCCUPATIONAL, PHYSICAL THERAPY AND COUNSELING ARE ALL PART OF OUR HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CARE. FOR THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2021, NORTHSIDE SERVED 116 STUDENTS IN OUR SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM, DAY TREATMENT AND INTEGRATED AS PART OF OUR PRE-K PROGRAM. NORTHSIDE CENTER'S SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAM PROVIDES EARLY AND INTENSIVE INDIVIDUALIZED INTERVENTIONS WHICH COMBINE CLINICAL AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AGES 5 TO 8. THESE CHILDREN MAY BE EXPERIENCING EMOTIONAL DIFFICULTIES, DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS OR SEVERE LANGUAGE AND LEARNING DISABILITIES. EACH CLASS IS LED BY A LICENSED SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER AND TWO ASSISTANT TEACHERS. THE CURRICULUM FOCUSES ON LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT, SCHOOL READINESS, READING AND MATH SKILLS AS WELL AS GROSS AND FINE MOTOR SKILLS. OUR SCHOOL AGE PROGRAM ENHANCES SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY ALONG WITH PHYSICAL AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AS NEEDED. FOR THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2021, NORTHSIDE SERVED 11 STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAM. THIS SUPPORT IS SUPPLIED BY THE STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AND IS USED TO PROVIDE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPECIAL NEEDS PRE-K AND SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN. THESE MONIES ARE SEPARATE AND APART FROM INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PLANS (IEP'S). IN ADDITION TO ITS HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CARE, WHAT MAKES THE DAY SCHOOL SO UNIQUE IS ITS ABILITY TO INTERNALLY REFER CHILDREN AND FAMILIES TO OTHER PROGRAMS AND SERVICES WITHIN THE SCHOOL. ADDITIONALLY, ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES ARE OFFERED WHICH ARE SUPPORTED BY PRIVATE FUNDING.
