TRAINING:THE TRAINING DEPARTMENT CONTINUED OFFERING CLASSES TO HDFCS THROUGH OUR HPD CONTRACT. THE TOTAL TAUGHT IN FY 21 WAS 141. WE ADDED TOPICS ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY: COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR BOARD ABOUT ENERGY PROJECTS, ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN NYC, HDFCS AND THE HOUSING MOVEMENT, HELP THE SECRETARY TAKE MINUTES, CAN YOUR CO-OP GO SMOKE FREE?, PPP WORKSHOP, AND RENT + MORTGAGE CANCELLATION ACT 2020.WE ALSO BEGAN TRAINING 1X MONTHLY TO THE FOLLOWING TENANTS IN CONVERSION: 135 W132, 204 AVE A, 55 CARLTON + 550 DEKALB, 2 BUILDINGS SPONSORED BY MANHATTAN VALLEY DEVELOPMENT CORP (133 W113 + 1880-7TH AVE), 601 W148, 993 UNION, 774 UNION, 1042 LONGFELLOW.WE PRESENTED AT THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF NY CONDO'S AND CO-OPS IN NOVEMBER 2020. WE CONTINUED OUR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN FY 21 TO SEVERAL AFFORDABLE CO-OPS IN CT: ST.PAUL'S FLAX HILLS IN SOUTH NORWALK (86 DUS) AND SEABURY IN NEW HAVEN (88 DUS). IN 2021 UHAB HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (UHAB HDFC) HAS SERVED INTERIM OWNERS OF 350 UNITS TO BE CONVERTED TO AFFORDABLE HDFC'S FOR LOW TO MODERATE INCOME RESIDENTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
ORGANIZING AND POLICY:SINCE 1998 UHAB ORGANIZERS HAVE REACHED OUT TO AND ENGAGED THOUSANDS OF TENANTS IN OVER 700 BUILDINGS ACROSS NEW YORK CITY. SINCE 2018 THE DEPARTMENT HAS FOCUSED ON ORGANIZING TENANT ASSOCIATIONS IN EAST BROOKLYN (BROWNSVILLE, EAST FLATBUSH AND EAST NEW YORK) IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BROOKLYN LEGAL SERVICES, AND WE LAUNCHED A TENANT-LED NEIGHBORHOOD GROUP CALLED HOPE (HOUSING ORGANIZERS FOR PEOPLE EMPOWERMENT) IN NOVEMBER 2019. AS PART OF THE CITYWIDE STABILIZING NYC INITIATIVE, WE ORGANIZE IN BUILDINGS OWNED BY PREDATORY EQUITY LANDLORDS AND COLLABORATE WITH OTHER HOUSING ORGANIZING GROUPS IN BROOKLYN TO DEVELOP BOROUGH-WIDE CAMPAIGNS.IN FY 2021, WE CONTINUED TO ORGANIZE SEVERAL BUILDINGS OWNED BY JASON KORN, ONE OF WHICH INITIATED A RENT STRIKE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN ORDER TO DEMAND RENT FORGIVENESS AND REPAIRS. WE ALSO PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL COALITIONS, INCLUDING STABILIZING NYC, HOUSING JUSTICE FOR ALL AND THE BROWNSVILLE GREEN JUSTICE COALITION. WE ALSO CONTINUED OUR WORK UNDER A CONTRACT WITH BROOKLYN LEGAL SERVICES TO CONNECT TENANTS IN EAST BROOKLYN TO RESOURCES THAT WOULD HELP THEM SECURE THEIR RIGHTS, FIGHT UNLIVABLE CONDITIONS IN THEIR BUILDINGS, AND PREVENT UNLAWFUL EVICTIONS DURING THE PANDEMIC.
MEMBER SERVICES:MEMBER SERVICES PROVIDES TOOLS AND SUPPORT THAT DIRECTLY SAVE MONEY FOR HOUSING DEVELOPMENT FUND CORPORATIONS (HDFC) CO-OPERATIVES IN ORDER TO SUSTAIN THE COMMUNITY OF HDFC MEMBERS AND FAMILIES. HDFCS ARE OPERATED AND MANAGED BY THEIR RESIDENTS. HDFCS ARE UNIQUE AMONG TYPES OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING HOMEOWNERSHIP BUT ALSO AMONG CO-OPS, SERVING LOW-INCOME FAMILIES, REMAINING AFFORDABLE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS, AND ALLOWING INDIVIDUALS TO AGE IN PLACE. FLIP INSURANCE: THE 36TH ANNUAL FLIP RENEWAL HAS CONCLUDED WITH 526 CO-OPS IN 585 LOCATIONS (TOTALING 9,492 UNITS WITH TIV $1,978,076,848.00). CO-OP ACCOUNTING: OUR BOOKKEEPING SERVICES PROVIDES REGULAR MONTHLY SERVICES TO CLIENTS TO ASSIST BUILDINGS WITH THEIR FINANCIAL TRACKING. OUR TEAM CONTINUES TO PROVIDE TRAINING ON FINANCIAL FILING REQUIREMENTS, AUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, BASIC AND ADVANCED ACCOUNTING TOPICS, AND PAYROLL. THE FINANCIAL CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC TIMES BROUGHT ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL BURDEN TO THE HDFC COMMUNITY, AND UHAB'S CO-OP ACCOUNTING DELIVERED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO BOARDS AND SHAREHOLDERS BEYOND THE REGULAR FINANCIAL SERVICES OFFERED. WHETHER PROVIDING INFORMATION ABOUT ACCESSING THE FEDERAL PPP LOAN PROGRAM, RENT RELIEF PROGRAMS FOR TENANTS WHO WEREN'T ABLE TO MAKE THEIR RENT PAYMENTS, OR GENERAL ASSISTANCE ON ESTATES AND UNITS NOW VACANT FROM SHAREHOLDERS PASSING AWAY DUE TO COVID-19, OUR STAFF PROVIDED ADDITIONAL SUPPORT TO BOARDS ON HOW TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY FINANCIAL OPERATIONS DESPITE THE CHALLENGES. ENERGY SERVICES PROGRAMS: UHAB'S CO-OPS GO SOLAR CAMPAIGN PROVIDES TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ON SOLAR PROJECTS AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO THE HDFC CO-OP COMMUNITY. MEMBER SERVICES CONTINUES TO OFFER A RANGE OF TRAININGS FOR THE HDFC COMMUNITY, DELIVERING TOPICS SUCH AS UNDERSTANDING YOUR HEATING SYSTEM PARTS I AND II, BOILER TO ROOF: REPAIR OR REPLACE HEATING SYSTEMS?, COMPLYING WITH LOCAL 97: GREEN ENERGY CODES, AND PLANNING ENERGY PROJECTS. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, WE OFFERED AN HDFC SPECIFIC RAT ACADEMY CLASS AND CO-HOSTED A SERIES OF TRAININGS WITH THE NYC SUSTAINABILITY HELP CENTER ON HOW TO FILE THE BENCHMARK REPORT IN COMPLIANCE WITH LOCAL LAW 84.COMMUNICATION & FUNDRAISING:IN FY 2021, UHAB HELD OUR FIRST EVER VIRTUAL GALA WHICH TOOK PLACE ON MARCH 24, 2021. OUR EVENT HONORED THE MUTUAL AID EFFORTS AND PERSEVERANCE OF NEW YORK CITY'S HDFC CO-OPS. THE EVENT FOCUSED ON HIGHLIGHTING THE WAYS IN WHICH RESIDENTS ACROSS THE CITY IN THESE CO-OPS CAME TOGETHER AMIDST A HEALTH AND ECONOMIC CRISIS TO PROVIDE NETWORKS OF SUPPORT AND MUTUAL AID TO ONE ANOTHER. DUE TO THE EVENT BEING VIRTUAL, EXPENSES WERE MINIMAL. THIS ALSO AFFECTED SPONSORSHIPS AND TICKET SALES, BUT WE STILL WERE ABLE TO GENERATE AROUND $125,000 IN REVENUE. ANOTHER MAJOR PROJECT IN FY 2021 FOR UHAB'S FUNDRAISING TEAM WAS THE LAUNCH OF OUR CO-OP IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (CIP). CIP WAS CREATED AFTER A SERIES OF OUTREACH AND SURVEYS WERE CONDUCTED IN 2020 AND HELPED US IDENTIFY THE ISSUES THAT PUT DISTRESSED HDFCS AT RISK OF FORECLOSURE. OUR FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATION TEAM WORKED HARD WITH PROGRAM STAFF TO DEVELOP A STRATEGY AND CAMPAIGN TO HELP EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE THIS PROGRAM AND ITS IMPACTS TO POTENTIAL FUNDERS AS WELL AS BENEFICIARIES OF THE PROGRAM'S SERVICES. OUR FIRST COMMITTED FUNDER, OAK FOUNDATION, PLEDGED FOUR YEARS OF SUPPORT TOWARDS THIS PROGRAM.
