THE HASTINGS CENTER'S RESEARCHERS INVESTIGATED A DIVERSE RANGE OF ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND POLICY QUESTIONS RELATED TO SCIENCE, MEDICINE, AND HEALTH. PROJECTS ADDRESSED: RACISM AND HEALTH; TECHNOLOGY AND HEALTH; THE IMPACT OF AND LESSONS FROM THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC; DEMENTIA AND ASSISTED DYING; ABORTION ETHICS; XENOTRANSPLANTATION; ADVANCES IN GENETICS INCLUDING PSYCHIATRIC GENETICS, SOCIOGENOMICS, AND INDIVIDUALIZED GENETIC INTERVENTIONS; DISABILITY AND TECHNOLOGY; AND CHIMERIC RESEARCH. WE PRODUCED ANALYSIS AND FORMULATED ADVICE ON THESE QUESTIONS, WHICH WE DISSEMINATED TO SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST AUDIENCES THROUGH THE PUBLICATION OF TWO SPECIAL REPORTS OF HASTINGS CENTER REPORT, MORE THAN 30 ARTICLES, BOOK CHAPTERS, AND COMMENTARIES. IN ADDITION, WE OFFERED MORE THAN 50 TALKS AND LECTURES TO AUDIENCES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND AROUND THE WORLD, AS WELL AS DOZENS OF INTERVIEWS WITH JOURNALISTS AT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL MEDIA OUTLETS. HASTINGS PRODUCED A SPECIAL VIRTUAL SUMMIT ON HEALTH EQUITY, CO-HOSTED THE GOOGLE HEALTH ETHICS EVENT, PLUS ADDITIONAL EVENTS ON ABORTION ETHICS, AND A SERIES ON AGING AND ACCESS TO HOUSING. OUR RESEARCHERS ALSO SERVED ON ADVISORY COMMITTEES FOR INTERNATIONAL, NATIONAL, AND LOCAL ENTITIES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND FOUNDATIONS, AND THE EDITORIAL BOARDS OF DOZENS OF ACADEMIC JOURNALS. THIS RESEARCH WAS SUPPORTED BY GRANTS, CONTRACTS, AND DONATIONS FROM PUBLIC AND PRIVATE FUNDERS, INCLUDING THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES, ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION, RUSSELL SAGE FOUNDATION, THE DONAGHUE FOUNDATION, AND THE GREENWALL FOUNDATION.
IN 2022, THE HASTINGS CENTER REPORT, A BIOETHICS JOURNAL PUBLISHED BY THE CENTER, FEATURED DISCUSSIONS OF HEALTH CARE ARCHITECTURE AS A MEDICAL INTERVENTION, TAKING DISABILITY SERIOUSLY IN BIOETHICS, REPRODUCTIVE EMBRYO EDITING AND JUSTICE, THE ALLOCATION OF OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN CLINICAL TRIALS DURING PANDEMICS, AND MANY OTHER TOPICS IN MEDICAL CARE, HEALTH POLICY, BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH, AND BIOTECHNOLOGY. SIX ISSUES OF THE REPORT APPEARED, CONTAINING A MIXTURE OF SCHOLARLY ANALYSIS AND EXPERT COMMENTARY. THE REPORT ALSO PUBLISHED TWO SUPPLEMENTS, ON RECKONING WITH ANTI-BLACK RACISM (WITH THE MARCH-APRIL ISSUE) AND ON CREATING CHIMERIC ANIMALS (WITH THE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER ISSUE). THE REPORT WAS DISTRIBUTED BY JOHN T. WILEY AND SONS, PRIMARILY IN ONLINE FORM, TO OVER 11,000 LIBRARIES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS (WITH ROUGHLY 6,500 SUBSCRIBING THROUGH THE WILEY ONLINE LIBRARY AND THE REST GAINING ACCESS THROUGH DISTRIBUTION SERVICES), AND TO ROUGHLY 240 INDIVIDUALS. ROUGHLY 620,000 ITEMS WERE DOWNLOADED. ETHICS AND HUMAN RESEARCH, A JOURNAL DEVOTED TO ISSUES IN THE ETHICS AND REGULATION OF RESEARCH ON HUMAN SUBJECTS, OFFERED SIX ISSUES IN 2022 ON TOPICS IN MEDICAL AND BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH, INCLUDING BIOBANK CONSENT PROCESSES, MENTAL ILLNESS AND IRB INCLUSIVENESS, BIG DATA RESEARCH AND GROUP HARM, AND DISCLOSURE OF ALZHEIMER DISEASE BIOMARKERS. E&HR WAS ALSO DISTRIBUTED BY WILEY AND SONS, PRIMARILY IN ONLINE FORM. ROUGHLY 5,300 INSTITUTIONS AND LIBRARIES SUBSCRIBED TO E&HR, AND ROUGHLY 40,000 ITEMS WERE DOWNLOADED. HASTINGS BIOETHICS FORUM, THE HASTINGS CENTER'S STRICTLY ONLINE PUBLICATION, FEATURES SCORES OF COMMENTARIES ON BIOETHICS TOPICS IN THE NEWS.
THE COMMUNICATIONS AND ENGAGEMENT DEPARTMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INFORMING AND ENGAGING DIVERSE AUDIENCES, INCLUDING JOURNALISTS, POLICYMAKERS, CLINICIANS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS, THE DEPARTMENT PRODUCES A WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, EDITS AND PUBLISHES HASTINGS BIOETHICS FORUM, PRODUCES EVENTS FOR THE PUBLIC AND KEY STAKEHOLDERS, ENGAGES AUDIENCES ON SOCIAL MEDIA, MANAGES THE WEBSITE, WRITES PRESS RELEASES ABOUT HASTINGS RESEARCH AND OTHER ACTIVITIES, PITCHES STORY IDEAS TO JOURNALISTS, AND WORKS WITH HASTINGS RESEARCH SCHOLARS TO DEVELOP AND PLACE OP-EDS. IN 2022, THE HASTINGS CENTER PRODUCED ITS MOST AMBITIOUS EVENT TO DATE: A TW0-DAY HEALTH EQUITY SUMMIT, CONVENED ONLINE WITH THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN MEDICAL COLLEGES CENTER FOR HEALTH JUSTICE. OVER 2,500 PEOPLE ATTENDED, AND CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION AND CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION CREDITS WERE GIVEN. ALSO IN 2022, THE CENTER SAW SIGNIFICANT GROWTH IN ITS NEWSLETTER EMAIL LIST TO 55,000, AND HASTINGS BIOETHICS FORUM REACHED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH TOPICAL COMMENTARIES ON A WIDE RANGE OF ISSUES, INCLUDING THE PANDEMIC, ABORTION, AND RACISM.
