THE POCANTICO CENTER IS MANAGED BY THE ROCKEFELLER BROTHERS FUND AS PART OF ITS AGREEMENT WITH THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION, ENTERED INTO IN 1991, UNDER WHICH THE FUND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RENOVATION, MAINTENANCE, AND OPERATION OF THIS HISTORIC SITE. IT ALSO SERVES AS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE, AND OFFERS PUBLIC ACCESS THROUGH A VISITATION PROGRAM, LECTURES AND CULTURAL EVENTS. IN 2021, DUE TO COVID-19, THE VISITATION PROGRAM CONTINUED TO BE CEASED. DURING 2021, 23 PUBLIC PROGRAMS WERE HELD, INCLUDING 2 FORUM/LECTURE/SYMPOSIUMS, 5 RESIDENCIES, 4 SUMMER PERFORMANCES, 3 SMALL PERFORMANCES, 1 COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAM, AND 8 OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THE PUBLIC PROGRAMS HELD IN 2021 INCLUDE BOTH IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL PROGRAMS.
A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT CENTERED AROUND THE REUSE OF THE ORANGERIE, BUILT BY JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER IN 1908 ON THE HISTORIC ROCKEFELLER FAMILY ESTATE AND BEQUEATHED TO THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN 1979 BY NELSON ROCKEFELLER, CONTINUED THROUGHOUT 2021. THE PROJECT WILL TRANSFORM THE LONG-DORMANT BUILDING INTO WHAT WILL BE ESTABLISHED AS THE DAVID ROCKEFELLER CREATIVE ARTS CENTER, A VIBRANT PUBLIC VENUE THAT WILL NURTURE THE ARTS BOTH LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY, WITH WORLD CLASS PERFORMANCES AND EXHIBITS, RESIDENCIES FOR ARTISTS WORKING ACROSS DISCIPLINES, AND SPACE FOR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY CULTURAL PROGRAMS. THE VENUE IS EXPECTED TO OPEN IN FALL 2022.
DURING 2021, 11 MEMBERS OF THE STAFF OF ROCKEFELLER BROTHERS FUND PROVIDED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS, GOVERNMENTAL BODIES AND COMMITTEES, AND 17 MEMBERS OF THE STAFF SERVED ON 59 CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS' BOARDS, COMMITTEES, PUBLIC COMMISSIONS, OR TASK FORCES.
THE POCANTICO CENTER OF THE ROCKEFELLER BROTHERS FUND, LOCATED WITHIN THE POCANTICO HISTORIC AREA (SEE ACTIVITY 1, ABOVE), BEGAN OPERATIONS IN APRIL OF 1994. THE POCANTICO CENTER IS A VENUE FOR CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS ON CRITICAL ISSUES RELATED TO THE ROCKEFELLER BROTHERS FUND'S MISSION. THE POCANTICO CENTER ALSO HOSTS ARTIST RESIDENCIES AND PROVIDES PERFORMANCE SPACE FOR ARTISTS SELECTED BY RBF GRANTEES AND NEW YORK CITY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE POCANTICO CENTER REMAINED CLOSED FOR MOST OF 2021, AND RESUMED IN-PERSON CONVENINGS IN OCTOBER 2021.THE POCANTICO CENTER HELD 8 CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS IN 2021, INCLUDING SOME WHICH WERE HELD VIRTUALLY.
