MEDICAL:OUR COMMITMENT TO HELPING CHILDREN WHO OTHERWISE WOULD GO WITHOUT HEALTHCARE NEVER WAVERED IN 2021, CHANGING LIVES IN CHINA, INDIA, CAMBODIA, AND UGANDA. WE PROVIDED 1,137 MEDICAL PROCEDURES, INCLUDING 88 CLEFT SURGERIES AND 142 LIFE-SAVING HEART OPERATIONS. SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR INCLUDE OUR FIRST PEDIATRIC SURGERY MISSION FOR CHILDREN BORN WITH ANORECTAL DEFECTS IN UGANDA. THIS SPECIAL WEEK OF HEALING, IN THE FAR NORTHERN GULU REGION, MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR 48 CHILDREN TO FINALLY RECEIVE THEIR OPERATIONS. WE ALSO EXPANDED OUR COMMITMENT TO CHILDREN BORN WITH CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS IN INDIA, PROVIDING SURGERY TO OVER 50 KIDS FROM THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
NUTRITION:IN 2021, WE EXPANDED OUR HOT MEAL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN ALONG THE BORDER REGION OF CAMBODIA. AFTER SEEING GREAT SUCCESS IN THE PHYSICAL HEALTH AND ENERGY OF CHILDREN RECEIVING LWB MEALS IN SOKHEM AND RANGSEI VILLAGES, WE CREATED A LUNCH AND DINNER PROGRAM IN A THIRD REMOTE VILLAGE WITH A HIGH RATE OF CHRONIC MALNUTRITION. THIS YEAR, WE SERVED OVER 205,000 MEALS TO AT-RISK CHILDREN. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN WE DISCOVERED THAT MANY OF THE 90+ CHILDREN LIVING AT A LOCAL LANDFILL WERE EATING DIRECTLY FROM THE DUMPSITE, WE CREATED A FOOD PROGRAM TO ENSURE THEY RECEIVE CHILDHOOD NUTRITION ESSENTIALS SUCH AS FRESH VEGETABLES, EGGS, AND FRUIT. LWB ALSO SUPPLIED HIGH QUALITY FORMULA TO 75 BABIES IN OUR HEALING HOMES AND FAILURE-TO-THRIVE INFANTS WHOSE MOTHERS WERE UNABLE TO BREASTFEED. THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC CONTINUED TO IMPACT REGIONS STRUGGLING WITH EXTREME POVERTY IN 2021, WITH A DRAMATIC RISE IN CHILDREN GOING WITHOUT FOOD AND FACING MALNUTRITION. OUR TEAMS AROUND THE WORLD DELIVERED ESSENTIAL FOOD STAPLES, SUCH AS RICE, BEANS, AND CORNMEAL, TO SUFFERING COMMUNITIES. OUR SUPPORTERS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR LWB TO DELIVER 314,000 POUNDS OF EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLIES TO CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES, PREVENTING OVER 35,700 PEOPLE FROM GOING HUNGRY.
HEALING HOMES:LWB'S HEALING HOMES PROGRAM SERVES CHILDREN WHO ARE ORPHANED OR ABANDONED. IN CHINA, THE CHILDREN WHO COME INTO OUR CARE ARE OFTEN MALNOURISHED, SICK, OR IN NEED OF URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION WHEN FOUND. IN INDIA, THIS IMPORTANT PROGRAM HELPS CHILDREN WHO ARE ABANDONED WITH HIV. THIS YEAR, 59 VULNERABLE CHILDREN STAYED IN OUR HEALING HOMES, AND EACH ONE RECEIVED THE ESSENTIAL, LIFE-AFFIRMING MESSAGE THAT THEY ARE PRECIOUS AND WORTHY OF LOVE.
