DURING FISCAL YEAR 2022, MWLS PROVIDED LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO 2,990 CLIENTS. 95 LEGAL CLINICS WERE HELD BENEFITTING 428 ATTENDEES. 26 OUTREACH OR TRAINING PRESENTATIONS WERE HELD ATTENDED BY 663 PEOPLE. 85 VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS PROVIDED LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN 247 CASES, DONATING 1,068 PRO-BONO HOURS VALUED AT $293,700. LEGAL REPRESENTATION BY MWLS ADVOCATES ALSO RESULTED IN SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC BENEFITS TO OUR CLIENTS. DURING FY22, MWLS PROCURED $321,853 IN DIRECT LUMP SUM BENEFITS FOR CLIENTS; $75,275 IN MONTHLY DIRECT BENEFITS TO CLIENTS; $2,249,241 IN LUMP SUM SAVINGS FOR CLIENTS; AND $1,968,385 IN MONTHLY PAYMENT SAVINGS TO CLIENTS. MWLS SUCCESSFULLY WORKED WITH OTHER LEGAL AID PROGRAMS FUNDED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS LEGAL ASSISTANCE CORPORATION (MLAC) AND MLAC STAFF TO LOBBY THE STATE LEGISLATURE TO DESIGNATE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN ACT FUNDS FOR THREE PROJECTS (EXPANSION OF MEDICAL-LEGAL PARTNERSHIPS, A FAMILY PRESERVATION PROJECT, AND A HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL PROJECT. THESE PROJECTS WILL BEGIN IN FY23. MWLS ALSO WAS AWARDED FUNDING TO REPRESENT AFGHANI REFUGEES WHO FLED AFGHANISTAN WHEN THE UNITED STATES MILITARY PULLED OUT LAST YEAR. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE IMMIGRATION ASSISTANCE TO AFGHANIS WHO ARE SEEKING SPECIAL IMMIGRANT VISAS AND ASYLUM. MWLS ALSO WORKED COLLECTIVELY WITH OUR 4 SISTER LEGAL AID PROGRAMS TO APPLY FOR AND RECEIVE FUNDING FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT TO REPRESENT TENANTS IN EVICTION MATTERS. THIS WAS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE COVID EVICTION LEGAL HELP PROJECT WHICH ENDED IN MARCH 2022 HAD PROVIDED SIGNIFICANTLY EXPANDED FUNDING FOR EVICTION WORK. THIS NEW GRANT ALLOWED MWLS TO RETAIN SOME OF THAT STAFF TO CONTINUE THE IMPORTANT COVID-EXACERBATED EVICTION WORK.
