AS THE AREA HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER (AHEC) FOR HAWAII ISLAND WE CONDUCT THE PRE-HEALTH CAREER CORPS PROGRAM (PHCC) WHICH IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT RURAL HEALTH ROTATIONS (MEDICAL SCHOOL THROUGH GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS) AND RECRUIT LOCAL STUDENTS INTO HEALTH CAREERS THROUGH HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS, CAREER PRESENTATIONS, WORK SITE TOURS, JOB SHADOWING AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. PHCC PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS: 2,389. RURAL ROTATION SUPPORT/HOUSING FOR 80 STUDENTS FOR A TOTAL OF 3,998 NIGHTS.
BE A LIFESAVER: BE A LIFESAVER HAWAII IS AN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN SURROUNDING CARDIAC ARREST. THE PROGRAM OFFERS FREE CHEST COMPRESSION AND AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) TRAINING ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE ISLAND. 3 AUTOMATIC CHEST COMPRESSION DEVICES WERE DONATED TO THE HAWAII COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT AND PLACED ON THE COUNTY'S TRAUMA HELICOPTER AND 2 AMBULANCES.
EAST HAWAII HEALTH CANCER CENTER: HILO MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION SUPPORTED THE EAST HAWAII HEALTH CANCER CENTER EXPANSION THROUGH A CAMPAIGN TO RAISE MONIES FOR THE MOSAIC MURAL AND HEALING GARDEN THAT CAN BE VIEWED FROM THE TREATMENT AREA. PATIENTS ARE ABLE TO SIT ON BENCHES IN THE GARDEN WHILE ENJOYING FRESH AIR AND SUNSHINE DURING TREATMENT
