IN 2021, THE ICRC RAN ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS IN 75 COUNTRIES. THE BULK OF THE WORK WAS CARRIED OUT IN AFRICA, ASIA AND THE PACIFIC, AND NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST AS TO ECONOMIC SECURITY. 3,575,484 PEOPLE RECEIVED FOOD AID AND 58% OF THEM WERE INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS (IDPS). 6,243,626 PEOPLE RECEIVED SUPPORT FOR FOOD PRODUCTION, 1,578,840 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM INCOME SUPPORT, 4,647,523 PEOPLE WERE GIVEN BASIC HOUSEHOLD ITEMS AND HYGIENE KITS TO IMPROVE THEIR LIVING CONDITIONS, AND 165,099 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM CAPACITY-BUILDING INITIATIVES. 6,652,978 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM WATER AND HABITAT PROJECTS THAT AIMED TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. ALSO, A TOTAL OF 30,342 BEDS HAVE BEEN CONTRIBUTED TO THE HOSPITALS WITH THE HELP OF NATIONAL SOCIETIESM ICRC IS ABLE TO SUPPORT 709 PRIMARY-HEALTH-CARE CENTERS COVERING A TOTAL POPULATION OF 14,251,421 PEOPLE ON AVERAGE. THE ICRC CONDUCTED FIRST-AID TRAINING SESSIONS FOR 54,198 PEOPLE, INCLUDING VOLUNTEERS POPLE WITH DISABILITIES RECEIVED GOOD-QUALITY REHABILITATIVE SERVICES AND SOCIAL SUPPORT THROUGH 318 PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY THE ICRC. THE ICRC CARRIED OUT ACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN AREAS CONTAMINATED BY MINES AND EXPLOSIVES REMNANTS OF WAR IN SOME COUNTRIES AND TERRITORIES. THE ICRC ALSO WORKED WITH UNITED NATIONS (UN) AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (NGOS) TO DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN INTERNATIONAL MINE-ACTION STANDARDS AND COORDINATION.
THE ICRC INTENDS TO PROTECT THE LIFE AND DIGNITY OF VARIOUS TARGET POPULATIONS AFFECTED BY CONFLICTS AND OTHER SITUATIONS OF VIOLENCE, EITHER BY VISITING DETAINEES OR BY RESTORING FAMILY LINKS. THE ICRC FACILITATED 1,651,904 PHONE AND INTERNET CALLS BETWEEN FAMILY MEMBERS, INCLUDING MIGRANTS, PEOPLE WITH RELATIVES DETAINED ABROAD, AND PEOPLE IN QUARANTINE OR COVID-19 TREATMENT FACILITIES. THE FATE OR WHEREABOUTS OF 8744 PEOPLE FOR TRACING, AS REQUESTED BY THEIR FAMILIES HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED BY THE ICRC. A TOTAL OF 361,871 PEOPLE VISITED OR TELEPHONED ICRC OFFICES WORLDWIDE FOR FAMILY-LINKS SERVICES OR OTHER RELATED CONCERNS IN THE RELATION TO FORENSICS. THE ICRC CARRIED OUT FORENSIC ACTIVITIES IN SOME TERRITORIES AROUND THE WORLD TO ENSURE PROPER AND DIGNIFIED MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN REMAINS AND TO HELP PREVENT AND RESOLVE CASES OF MISSING PERSONS. THE ICRC DELEGATES VISITED 889 PLACES OF DETENTION HOLDING 731,112 DETAINEES, INCLUDING THOSE HELD IN RELATION TO ARMED CONFLICTED AND OTHER SITUATIONS OF VIOLENCE. A TOTAL OF 25,675 DETAINEES WERE MONITORED INDIVIDUALLY; AMONG THEM 14,415 DETAINEES WERE VISITED AND REGISTERED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2021. IN LINE WITH INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL MEASURES AGAINST COVID-19, THE ICRC TEMPORARILY PUT ON HOLD ITS VISITS TO DETAINEES IN CERTAIN CONTEXTS. A TOTAL OF 10,919 PEOPLE RECEIVED ATTESTATIONS OF DETENTION.
THE ICRC INTENDS TO DEVELOP AN ACTIVE DIALOGUE WITH NATIONAL AUTHORITIES WORLDWIDE TO PROMOTE STAFF RATIFICATION OF OR ACCESSION TO INTERNATIONAL AT THE END OF 2021. THERE WERE 118 NATIONAL IHL COMMITTEES WORLDWIDE, AND AT LEAST ONE SUCH COMMITTEE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING OFFICIALLY ESTABLISHED; SEVERAL STATES WERE CONSIDERING THE POSSIBILITY OF CREATING SUCH COMMITTEES OF THEIR OWN. AMID COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL AND GROUP GATHERINGS, ICRC DELEGATES CONTINUED TO ENGAGE IN DIALOGUE WITH WEAPON BEARERS INCLUDING STATE FORCES, PEACEKEEPING TROOPS AND MEMBERS OF THE NON-STATE ARMED GROUPS OR COALITIONS OF ARMED GROUPS WITH A VIEW TO PROMOTING RESPECT FOR IHL AND OTHER APPLICABLE NORMS, INCREASING UNDERSTANDING OF THE ICRC'S MANDATE AND ACTIVITIESM AND FACILITATING SAFE PASSAGE FOR ICRC STAFF IN THE FIELD.
