THE LAW SOCIETY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA REGULATES THE LEGAL PROFESSION IN BC, PROTECTING THE PUBLIC INTEREST IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE BY SETTING AND ENFORCING STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT FOR LAWYERS. THE LAW SOCIETY ALSO BRINGS A VOICE TO ISSUES AFFECTING THE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE DELIVERY OF LEGAL SERVICES.

REGULATION PROGRAM SERVICES INCLUDE RECEIVING AND INVESTIGATING COMPLAINTS ABOUT LAWYER CONDUCT, MEETING AND REVIEWING WITH MEMBERS TO DETERMINE WHETHER DISCIPLINARY ACTION IS REQUIRED, DETERMINATION OF THE DISCIPLINARY ACTION THROUGH INVESTIGATIONS, LEGAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST MEMBERS, AND ACTING AS CUSTODIAN WHEN LAWYERS CANNOT CONTINUE TO PRACTICE DUE TO ILLNESS, DEATH OR DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS.
INDEMNIFICATION PROGRAM PROTECTS THE PROFESSION AND THE PUBLIC FROM THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRACTICE OF LAW BY PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY LIABILITY INDEMNITY COVERAGE FOR LAWYERS. THE PROGRAM DELIVERS CLAIMS AND RISK MANAGEMENT AND UNDERWRITING SERVICES.
EDUCATION & PRACTICE PROGRAM SERVICES INCLUDE SUPPORT TO LAWYERS FOR ALL INQUIRIES AND ACTIVITIES RELATING TO FEE BILLINGS, STATUS CHANGES, UNCLAIMED TRUST FUNDS AND THE ADMINISTRATION FOR THE REPORTING OF CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. IT ALSO INCLUDES ENSURING NEW AND TRANSFERRING LAWYERS ARE PROPERLY QUALIFIED TO PRACTICE LAW, ADMINISTRATING THE PROFESSIONAL LEGAL TRAINING COURSE TO PROSPECTIVE LAWYERS, AND PROVIDING LAWYERS WITH REMEDIAL PROGRAMS TO THOSE IDENTIFIED THROUGH PRACTICE REVIEWS.
