SPIE IS AN INTERNATIONAL NONPROFIT TECHNICAL SOCIETY DEDICATED TO ADVANCING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS OF OPTICAL, PHOTONIC, IMAGING AND OPTOELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH ITS MEETINGS, EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND PUBLICATIONS

TECHNICAL EVENTS - SPIE ORGANIZED TECHNICAL/SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING MEETINGS WITH APPROXIMATELY 33,000 ATTENDEES. INCLUDED IN THE CONTENT OF THESE TECHNICAL EVENTS ARE BASIC RESEARCH, RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY METHODS AND APPLICATIONS. MANY OF OUR TECHNICAL EVENTS ALSO INCLUDE EXHIBITS AND A CAREER CENTER. THERE WERE 290 CONFERENCES HELD AT THE EVENTS IN 2023 WHERE SCIENTISTS PRESENTED THEIR RESEARCH FINDINGS AND COLLABORATED ON THEIR WORK. IN ADDITION TO THE CONFERENCES OFFERED AT THE 2023 TECHNICAL EVENTS, THERE WERE 120 IN-PERSON EDUCATIONAL COURSES.
MEMBERSHIP - IN 2023 SPIE PROVIDED SUPPORT TO ATTEND CONFERENCES TO 367 STUDENT AUTHORS, AND ACTIVITY GRANTS FOR 124 STUDENT CHAPTER GROUPS. AS PART OF OUR MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM, SPIE ALSO PROVIDES REDUCED DUES FOR STUDENTS AND MEMBERS FROM DEVELOPING NATIONS.
PUBLICATIONS - SPIE HELPS THE SCIENTIST AUTHORS PUBLISH THEIR WORK VIA PUBLICATIONS AND JOURNALS. THE TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS INCLUDE: BOOKS, JOURNALS, CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS, CD-ROMS AND WEBSITE PRODUCTS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONFERENCE ARE TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS THAT EDUCATE THE ENGINEERING COMMUNITY ABOUT CURRENT TECHNOLOGY, RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS. WEBSITE LINKS ALLOW ACCESS TO PRODUCTS AND SERVICES USED BY SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS. APPROXIMATELY 9,000 HARDCOPY BOOKS WERE SHIPPED IN 2023. SPIE IS ALSO THE PUBLISHER OF 15 TECHNICAL JOURNALS: OPTICAL ENGINEERING, JOURNAL OF BIOMEDICAL OPTICS, JOURNAL OF MICRO/NANO LITHOGRAPHY, MEMS AND MOEMS, JOURNAL OF NANOPHOTONICS, JOURNAL OF APPLIED REMOTE SENSING, JOURNAL OF PHOTONICS FOR ENERGY, JOURNAL OF ASTRONOMY TELESCOPES, JOURNAL OF MEDICAL IMAGING, JOURNAL OF NEUROPHOTONICS, JOURNAL OF ADVANCED PHOTONICS AND JOURNAL OF OPTICAL MICROSYSTEMS, JOURNAL OF ADVANCED PHOTONICS NEXUS, JOURNAL OF PHOTONICS INSIGHTS AND BIOS JOURNAL. MORE THAN 4,000 OUTREACH POSTERS WERE DISTRIBUTED, AND OVER 7,000 WOMEN IN OPTICS PLANNERS WERE PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED. 24 CAREER ADVANCEMENT EVENTS WERE HELD, INCLUDING WEBINARS, PANELS, IN-PERSON WORKSHOPS, AND NETWORKING AND MENTORING SOCIALS, SERVING OVER 600 ATTENDEES. SPIE ALSO PRESENTED 120 IN-PERSON SHORT COURSES AT 7 EVENTS, 7 IN-COMPANY TRAINING SESSIONS, AND ISSUED 1,227 CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION.
