SPIE IS AN INTERNATIONAL, NONPROFIT TECHNICAL SOCIETY DEDICATED TO ADVANCING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS OF OPTICAL, PHOTONIC, IMAGING AND OPTOELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH ITS MEETINGS, EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND PUBLICATIONS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
TECHNICAL EVENTS - IN 2020 SPIE'S TECHNICAL EVENTS WERE DRASTICALLY AFFECTED BY THE PANDEMIC. 3 MEETINGS WERE HELD IN-PERSON AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS IN THE US AND THE REMAINING WERE HELD AS DIGITAL FORUMS. SPIE ORGANIZED TECHNICAL/SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING MEETINGS WITH APPROXIMATELY 42,000 ATTENDEES. INCLUDED IN THE CONTENT OF THESE TECHNICAL EVENTS ARE BASIC RESEARCH, RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY METHODS AND APPLICATIONS. MANY OF OUR TECHNICAL EVENTS ALSO INCLUDE EXHIBITS AND A CAREER CENTER. THERE WERE 311 CONFERENCES HELD AT THE EVENTS IN 2020 WHERE SCIENTISTS PRESENTED THEIR RESEARCH FINDINGS AND COLLABORATED ON THEIR WORK. IN ADDITION TO THE CONFERENCES OFFERED AT THE 2020 TECHNICAL EVENTS, THERE WERE 84 IN-PERSON EDUCATIONAL COURSES.
PUBLICATIONS - SPIE HELPS THE SCIENTIST AUTHORS PUBLISH THEIR WORK VIA PUBLICATIONS AND JOURNALS. THE TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS INCLUDE: BOOKS, JOURNALS, CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS, CD-ROMS AND WEBSITE PRODUCTS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONFERENCE ARE TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS THAT EDUCATE THE ENGINEERING COMMUNITY ABOUT CURRENT TECHNOLOGY, RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS. WEBSITE LINKS ALLOW ACCESS TO PRODUCTS AND SERVICES USED BY SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS. APPROXIMATELY, 6,000 HARDCOPY BOOKS WERE SHIPPED IN 2020. SPIE IS ALSO THE PUBLISHER OF 12 TECHNICAL JOURNALS: OPTICAL ENGINEERING, JOURNAL OF BIOMEDICAL OPTICS, JOURNAL OF MICRO/NANO LITHOGRAPHY, MEMS AND MOEMS, JOURNAL OF NANOPHOTONICS, JOURNAL OF APPLIED REMOTE SENSING, JOURNAL OF PHOTONICS FOR ENERGY, JOURNAL OF ASTRONOMY TELESCOPES, JOURNAL OF MEDICAL IMAGING, JOURNAL OF NEUROPHOTONICS, JOURNAL OF ADVANCED PHOTONICS AND JOURNAL OF OPTICAL MICROSYSTEMS. EDUCATION - SPIE AWARDED 82 SCHOLARSHIPS, 19 EDUCATION OUTREACH GRANTS AND SUPPORTED 6 SCIENCE FAIRS. MORE THAN 700 OUTREACH POSTERS WERE DISTRIBUTED, AND OVER 1,700 WOMEN IN OPTICS PLANNERS WERE PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED. WE HELD 2 CAREER SUMMIT EVENTS WITH OVER 20 COURSES AND WORKSHOPS IN ADDITION TO 2 STUDENT CHAPTER LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS AND 3 STUDENT LUNCH WITH THE EXPERTS. SPIE ALSO PRESENTED 94 SHORT COURSES AND WORKSHOPS AND ISSUED 703 CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION. SPIE ALSO OFFERS ON-DEMAND ONLINE COURSES.
MEMBERSHIP - IN 2020 SPIE PROVIDED $72,873 IN STUDENT CHAPTER TRAVEL SUPPORT FOR 67 STUDENT CHAPTERS AND $142,641 IN ACTIVITY GRANTS FOR 192 STUDENT CHAPTER GROUPS. AS PART OF OUR MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM, SPIE ALSO PROVIDES REDUCED DUES FOR STUDENTS AND MEMBERS FROM DEVELOPING NATIONS.
