Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
ANIMAL CARE - THE SACRAMENTO ZOO IS PROUD TO HAVE AN OUTSTANDING COLLECTION OF ANIMALS TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE OUR COMMUNITY. THE ZOO IS HOME TO 436 ANIMALS REPRESENTING 112 SPECIES. OF THAT NUMBER, 40 SPECIES ARE CONSIDERED CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, ENDANGERED OR VULNERABLE BY THE INTERNATIONAL UNION FOR CONSERVATION OF NATURE (IUCN). OF THE SPECIES HOUSED AT THE ZOO, 49 ARE MANAGED COOPERATIVELY AS PART OF THE ZOO'S PARTICIPATION IN PROGRAMS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS (AZA).
MEMBERSHIP AND VISITOR SERVICES - WE STARTED 2021 IN A STATE-MANDATED CLOSURE DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. WE RECEIVED PERMISSION TO REOPEN ON JANUARY 15 BUT LESS THAN TWO WEEKS LATER A MAJOR WINTER STORM MOVED THROUGH THE REGION WITH SUSTAINED WINDS IN EXCESS OF 35 MILES PER HOUR, AND GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 60 MILES PER HOUR. WHILE NO ANIMALS WERE HARMED DURING THE STORM, WE HAD TO REMAIN CLOSED FOR THREE DAYS TO REMOVE DEBRIS AND COMPLETE SOME REPAIRS. DESPITE THE CHALLENGING START TO 2021, 542,417 VISITORS CAME TO THE ZOO DURING THE YEAR TO BE ENTERTAINED AND EDUCATED.
EDUCATION AND SUSTAINABILITY - THE ZOO'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO COMPLY WITH CALIFORNIA SCIENCE STANDARDS. EMERGING FROM THE PANDEMIC THESE PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO INCORPORATE EDUCATION, RECREATION AND THE UNIQUE SETTING OF THE ZOO. NEARLY 5,000 GUESTS ENJOYED THE ZOO AS PART OF SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS IN 2021. IN ADDITION, 75 CLASSROOMS PARTICIPATED IN VIRTUAL LEARNING PROGRAMS AND THE ZOO COMPLETED 14 ONSITE PROGRAMS WITHIN A NEARBY SCHOOL DISTRICT AS PART OF A GRANT PROGRAM. ALSO, BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOURS CONTINUE TO BE POPULAR WITH ZOO VISITORS. OVER 800 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THESE UNIQUE TOURS IN 2021, WHICH PERMIT THE VISITOR TO EXPERIENCE THE ANIMALS FROM THE KEEPERS VIEWPOINT. LASTLY, OUR VOLUNTEER TEAM OF EDUCATIONAL DOCENTS CONTINUE TO ENGAGE AND INFORM ZOO VISITORS. 80 DOCENTS VOLUNTEERED OVER 3,500 HOURS TO THE ZOO IN 2021. AS A CONSERVATION ORGANIZATION, THE SACRAMENTO ZOO IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING WILDLIFE CONSERVATION THROUGH FINANCIAL AND IN-KIND SUPPORT. IN 2021, THE SACRAMENTO ZOO DISTRIBUTED OR COMMITTED CONSERVATION GRANT FUNDS IN SUPPORT OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIES: GIANT ANTEATER, ORANGUTAN, CHIMPANZEE, LEMURS, THICK-BILLED PARROT, GROUND HORNBILL, WESTERN POND TURTLE, GREVY'S ZEBRA, GIRAFFE, OKAPI, SNOW LEAPARD, LION, JAGUAR AND CHEETAH.
