DUE TO COVID, THE ORGANIZATION'S IN-PERSON CONFERENCE HAD TO BE VIRTUAL. A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS DECIDED TO NOT PARTICIPATE AND THE STUDENT COUNT WAS WAY DOWN TO AROUND 400. WHEN THE PROGRAM CAN OPERATE IN A LIVE SETTING IT IS MUCH BETTER. THE STUDENTS ARE ASSIGNED COUNTRIES BY SCHOOLS AND EACH STUDENT SERVES ON A MAJOR UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE. THE STUDENTS RESEARCH AND PREPARE FOR THE CONFERENCE BY WRITING PAPERS ON THE AGENDA TOPICS CHOSEN FOR THEIR COMMITTEE. THEY ALSO SUBMIT RESOLUTIONS TO ATTEMPT TO BRING A SOLUTION TO THE GLOBAL ISSUE FORWARD. MODEL UNITED NATIONS IS A VERY POPULAR PROGRAM IN MANY MIDDLE SCHOOLS, HIGH SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES. THE MUN OREGON IS HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON CAMPUS WHICH HAS A LARGE POPULATION OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS. A NUMBER OF MUN PARTICIPATES CHOOSE A CAREER IN GOVERNMENT, THE STATE DEPARTMENT AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF NGOS. THIS PROGRAM ALLOWS STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ON DEBATE SKILLS, CONFLICT RESOLUTIONS AND THEIR ABILITIES TO DEFEND THE POSITIONS OF THE COUNTRY THEY REPRESENT.
