Part 3 - Line 4a
THE PITTOCK MANSION SOCIETY (THE SOCIETY) OPERATES THE HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM WHICH HAS HISTORICALLY BEEN OPEN TO THE PUBLIC OVER 330 DAYS PER YEAR. DUE TO A MANDATORY CLOSURE RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS (WILDFIRE SMOKE), THE SOCIETY WAS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FROM SEPTEMBER 10 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 19. THE SOCIETY CLOSED AGAIN FROM NOVEMBER 18, 2020, THROUGH FEBRUARY 24, 2021, DUE TO MANDATORY CLOSURES RELATED TO THE COVID- 19 PANDEMIC. THE SOCIETY EDUCATES THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE PITTOCK FAMILY AND PORTLAND HISTORY WHILE CELEBRATING THE DEVELOPMENT OF PORTLAND. THIS PAST FISCAL YEAR, THE ORGANIZATION WELCOMED 28,015 VISITORS AND CONTINUED SAFE OPERATIONS FOR VISITORS AND STAFF; THIS INCLUDES: (1) VISITATION TO THE MUSEUM BY 3,246 YOUTH AND (2) ENGAGEMENT OF OVER 560 VISITORS THROUGH THE SOCIETY'S PARTNERSHIPS WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, SUCH AS OREGON TRAIL'S FINE ARTS FOR ALL AND LOCAL COUNTY LIBRARY CULTURAL PASS PROGRAMS THIS PAST YEAR, THE SOCIETY'S PROGRAMMING EFFORTS FOCUSED ON DIGITAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES. WE CONTINUED TO OFFER OUR VIRTUAL TOUR ONLINE ALLOWING THE COMMUNITY TO EXPLORE THE MANSION FROM HOME. WE ALSO DIGITIZED OUR MT. HOOD PERSPECTIVES EXHIBIT, AND WE MADE OUR DISCOVERY PROGRAM BOOKLET AND MATERIALS AVAILABLE ONLINE FOR SCHOOLS. AS THE SOCIETY WORKED TO WITHSTAND THE ONGOING IMPACTS OF THE PANDEMIC ON STAFFING AND OPERATIONS, WE REACHED OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND BEGAN A COLLABORATION WITH VANPORT MOSAIC TO INSTALL A TEMPORARY EXHIBIT OFFERING ADDITIONAL CONTENT FOR VISITORS. VANPORT MOSAIC IS A COMMUNITY-BASED MEMORY ACTIVISM ORGANIZATION. THIS COLLABORATION RESULTED IN A TEMPORARY EXHIBIT THAT HONORED THE LEGACY OF VANPORT, OREGON, AND MARKED A NEW STEP FOR OUR ORGANIZATION IN BROADENING THE SCOPE OF OUR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PARTNERSHIPS. VANPORT WAS A MULTIRACIAL AND MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY OF OVER 400,000 RESIDENTS THAT WAS BUILT TO HOUSE MIGRANT WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO RELOCATED TO THE PORTLAND REGION DURING WORLD WAR II AND DESTROYED BY A FLOOD IN 1948. VANPORT MOSAIC ALSO LED THE DEVELOPMENT AND HOSTING OF A SUITE OF VIRTUAL PROGRAMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FEATURED EXHIBIT. FROM THE START OF THE EXHIBIT OPENING IN FEBRUARY 2021 THROUGH JUNE 2021, THE MUSEUM WELCOMED OVER 17,000 VISITORS, MANY OF WHOM VISITED THE MUSEUM SOLELY TO SEE THE EXHIBIT.
THE PITTOCK MANSION SOCIETY (THE SOCIETY) FURNISHES, CONSERVES, AND MAINTAINS THE COLLECTIONS OF ANTIQUE FURNITURE, DECORATIVE ART, FINE ART, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND HISTORIC DOCUMENTS WITHIN PITTOCK MANSION, A NATIONAL REGISTER HISTORIC PROPERTY THAT IS A HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM. THE SOCIETY CONTINUED TO WORK WITH THE CITY OF PORTLAND TO (1) ADVOCATE FOR PRESERVATION OF THE HOUSE, AS WELL AS (2) FIND THE SOURCE OF MOLD IN ONE OF THE ROOMS, WHICH LED TO THE DISCOVERY AND REPAIR OF A LEAKING STEAM PIPE IN THE ATTIC. THIS INCIDENT HAS BROUGHT THE OPPORTUNITY TO REMOVE THE WALLPAPER (WHICH WAS DAMAGED BY MOLD), AND WE WILL BE RESTORING THE ROOM TO ITS ORIGINAL PAINTED FINISHED, AS DOCUMENTED IN THE HISTORIC STRUCTURES REPORT AND SUBSEQUENT PAINT SEROLOGY.
