EDUCATE, INSPIRE AND EMPOWER AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY THAT WORKS TO IMPROVE OUR MARINE ENVIRONMENT

DURING FY2021, SOUND EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCED CONTINUED PROGRAM DISRUPTION DUE TO THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC TO ITS OVERNIGHT PROGRAMS ABOARD THE SCHOONER ADVENTURESS. THE ORGANIZATION THEREFORE ADAPTED ITS PROGRAMS TO INCLUDE "VIRTUAL VOYAGES AND "CONSECUTIVE DAY PROGRAMS." THESE PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS FROM OREGON AND WASHINGTON STATES PARTICIPATING IN VIRTUAL VOYAGES. DURING 35 HOUR PROGRAMS DELIVERED ABOARD ADVENTURESS TO STUDENTS LEARNING VIRTUALLY IN THEIR CLASSROOMS (OR HOMES), SOUND EXPERIENCE PROGRAM STAFF AND CREW DELIVERED INTERACTIVE ONLINE LESSONS SUCH AS SALISH SEA DRIFTERS: PLANKTON 101 IN WHICH STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT PLANKTON COLLECTION AND OBSERVATION, AND EXPLORED LIVE PLANKTON SAMPLES THROUGH A SHIPBOARD MICROSCOPE. ADDITIONAL VIRTUAL PROGRAMS WERE DELIVERED DURING PUBLIC SCHOOL SPRING BREAK WEEKS BY SHIPBOARD LEADERSHIP AND PROGRAM STAFF ABOARD ADVENTURESS. STUDENTS "TOURED" THE SHIP VIRTUALLY, LEARNED ABOUT SYSTEMS AND SAFETY, AND EXPLORED SKILLS OF A SAILOR AND PROFESSIONAL CREW MEMBER ROLES THAT ARE NEEDED TO SAFELY OPERATE A VESSEL.
PARTNER PROGRAMS CONTINUED TO BE A MAJOR FOCUS FOR SOUND EXPERIENCE WHICH INCLUDED SEATTLE SKILLS CENTER/SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS WEEKLONG SUMMER CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) PROGRAMS WHERE STUDENTS EARNED HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT FOR LEARNING INDEPTH SHIPBOARD SYSTEMS AND SKILLS NEEDED TO "RUN THE DECK" OF A VESSEL. OTHER IMPORTANT NEW AND GROWING PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS INCLUDE GENDER ODYSSEY AT SEA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SEATTLE'S TRANSFAMILIES NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION FOR THEIR TYTAN (TRANS YOUTH TAKING ACTION) WHERE TRANSGENDER AND GENDERDIVERSE TEENAGERS COULD JOURNEY ABOARD ADVENTURESS IN A SPACE THAT ENABLED THEM TO BE THEMSELVES IN A FUN, DYNAMIC AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT. GOALS INCLUDED SUPPORTING DIFFERENCES, MAKING NEW FRIENDS, EXPANDING THEIR COMFORT ZONES AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN PARTICIPATING YOUNG PEOPLE. AS WITH ALL PROGRAMS, GENDER ODYSSEY MODELED TEAMWORK AND RESPONSIBILITY, AND PROVIDED STRONG CREW ROLE MODELS WITH RESPECT TO ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND COMMUNITY AS WELL AS AN INTRODUCTION TO POSSIBLE MARITIME CAREER PATHS.
SOUND EXPERIENCE CONTINUED TO EXPERTLY MAINTAIN ITS NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK, U.S. COASTGUARD COMMERCIALLYLICENSED SAILING SHIP ADVENTURESS WITH THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS ALONG WITHREGULAR MAINTENANCE. CREW AND SHIPYARD STAFF ASSESSED AND REPAIRED THE SHIP'S FIBERGLASS WATERTANKS TO ENSURE A CLEAN AND RELIABLE WATER SYSTEM FOR ALL WHO SAIL ABOARD. MEMBERS OF THEBOARDLED SHIP COMMITTEE WORKED TOGETHER WITH HAVEN BOATWORKS TO TRANSFORM A MAIN TOPMASTINTO A MAIN GAFF.
