WE ENVISION A WORLD WHERE WOMEN LIVE LONGER AND HEALTHIER LIVES BECAUSE CANCERS ARE PREVENTED, CAUGHT EARLY, OR CURED.THE RIVKIN CENTER IS A LEADER IN THE OVARIAN CANCER COMMUNITY, INVESTING $15.3 MILLION IN LIFE-SAVING OVARIAN CANCER RESEARCH, AND HOSTING INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CANCER RESEARCH. RIVKIN'S WORK HAS ALSO EMBRACED THE BREAST CANCER COMMUNITY, EDUCATING THOUSANDS OF WOMEN EACH YEAR -- IN COLLEGES, COMPANIES, AND COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE WEST COAST -- TO PREVENT AND DETECT OVARIAN AND BREAST CANCER AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. THESE TWO ILLNESSES ARE GENETICALLY LINKED AND AFFECT APPROXIMATELY 250,000 WOMEN EACH YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES. FOLLOWING OUR APPLICATION PERIOD FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH GRANTS, WE FUNDED SOME OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE PILOT AND SCHOLAR AWARDS. WE COULD NOT SUPPORT AS MANY RESEARCHERS IN 2021 BECAUSE OF DECREASED FUNDRAISING REVENUE, BUT WE STILL INVESTED IN THE BEST SCIENCE WE COULD FIND THANKS TO OUR TEAM OF INTERNATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER RESEARCH REVIEWERS. FOR THE 2021 GRANTING PERIOD, THE RIVKIN CENTER RECEIVED 129 APPLICATIONS FOR PILOT STUDY AND SCIENTIFIC SCHOLAR AWARDS. WE GRANTED MORE THAN $500K WITH THREE NEW PILOT AWARD GRANTS, ONE SCIENTIFIC SCHOLAR AWARD, ONE BRIDGE FUNDING AWARD AND CONTINUED FUNDING FOR THREE SCIENTIFIC SCHOLAR AWARDS GRANTED IN 2020.
OUR EDUCATION TEAM CONTINUED TO WORK VIRTUALLY, HOSTING 136 WORKSHOPS AND REACHING ALMOST 6000 PEOPLE WITH OUR BREAST AND OVARIAN CANCER EDUCATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAM. THEY ALSO INTRODUCED MORE INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE AND DEEPER INFORMATION AND DATA ABOUT HOW THESE TWO CANCERS AFFECT POPULATIONS DIFFERENTLY. OUR INTERNAL TEAM OF 2.5 STAFF MEMBERS OVERSEES ABOUT 45 INSTRUCTORS AND SURVIVORS THROUGHOUT THE WEST COAST.
