KILLER WHALE CONSERVATION - OCEANS INITIATIVE HAS RESEARCH PROJECTS ON ALL THREE THREATS TO THE ENDANGERED SOUTHERN RESIDENT KILLER WHALES - NOT ENOUGH SALMON, TOO MUCH NOISE, AND CONTAMINANTS. WE CONDUCT A LAND-BASED SURVEY TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF VESSEL AND ACOUSTIC MITIGATION MEASURES.


SOUND OCEAN - OCEANS INITIATIVE STUDIES THE IMPACTS OF IN-AIR AND UNDERWATER NOISE ON FISH, SEABIRDS AND MARINE MAMMALS. WE ALSO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY AS "CITIZEN SCIENTISTS" TO HELP US COLLECT DATA SO WE CAN MEASURE OCEAN NOISE LEVELS.


DOLPHIN ECOLOGY - OCEANS INITIATIVE USES NON-INVASIVE WAYS TO UNDERSTAND ENVIRONMENTAL, ANIMAL, AND POPULATION HEALTH. WE ARE DEVELOPING TOOLS TO REDUCE BYCATCH OF DOLPHINS IN POORLY MONITORED FISHERIES AND REDUCE THE NUMBER OF DOLPHINS KILLED EACH YEAR BY FISHING GEAR.
