THE NONPROFIT WAS IN ITS INFANCY DURING THIS PERIOD, AND AS SUCH IT DIDNT HAVE THREE FULLY FLESHED OUT PROGRAMS. AT LEAST, HOWEVER, SOME OF MFSAS CORE EFFORTS CAN BE CATEGORIZED AS COMMUNICATIONS AND MEMBERSHIP, WITH MFSAS BOARD AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE RESPONSIBLE FOR MUCH OF OUR OUTPUT. AMONG THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS MFSA LISTS FOR THIS PERIOD ARE: OBTAINING A $500,000 DEVELOPMENT GRANT FROM THE STANTON FOUNDATION, WHICH ENABLED THE HIRING THE ORGANIZATIONS FIRST EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MAINTAINING A REGULAR MAILING LIST AND SENDING REGULAR NEWSLETTERS AND OTHER COMMUNICATIONS TO MEMBERS INSTITUTING A QUARTERLY ALL-HANDS MEETING SCHEDULE IN WHICH MEMBERS COULD TAKE PART, WITH INVITED GUEST SPEAKERS INCLUDING MIT FACULTY AND OTHER FIGURES PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR OTHER EFFORTS AT PROMOTING FREE EXPRESSION, INCLUDING A CONFERENCE ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY (IN WHICH MULTIPLE MFSA MEMBERS AND DIRECTORS PARTICIPATED), AS WELL AS A COURSE ON FREE EXPRESSION IN MITS PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT, WHICH ENABLED THE PROFESSORS TO BRING IN GUEST SPEAKERS. PROVIDED EXTENSIVE REVIEW AND COMMENT TO A WORKING GROUP ON FREE EXPRESSION AT MIT REGARDING PROPOSED POLICY CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS AIMED AT STRENGTHENING FREE EXPRESSION AT THE INSTITUTE.
