THE HISTORIC LENSIC THEATER PROVIDES A VENUE FOR MUSIC, THEATER, DANCE, AND OTHER ART FORMS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
THE ORGANIZATION MAINTAINS AND OPERATES THE HISTORIC LENSIC THEATER WHICH FUNCTIONS YEAR-ROUND. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND STATE-MANDATED RESTRICTIONS ON INDOOR MASS GATHERINGS, THE LENSIC HAD TO CANCEL ALL LIVE PERFORMANCES FROM MARCH 13, 2020 THROUGH JUNE 16, 2021. FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2021 THE LENSIC, UNABLE TO PRESENT LIVE SHOWS, CONTINUED A DIGITAL FORMAT. IN ADDITION, THE ORGNANIZATION UNDERTOOK SOME MAJOR REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT PROJECTS AND DEEP-CLEANED THE ENTIRE FACILITY.
THE LENSIC'S TOURING ARTISTS PRESENTATIONS - SINCE 2001, THE LENSIC PERFORMING ARTS CENTER HAS PRESENTED AND PRODUCED PERFORMANCES OF ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THE LENSIC'S YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMMING IS INTEGRAL TO FULFILLING THE ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION BY PRESENTING A WIDE-RANGING, DIVERSE SERIES OF PROGRAMS AND ARTISTS. PROGRAMS INCLUDE POPULAR CONCERTS, DANCE EVENTS, WORLD MUSIC, JAZZ, CLASSICAL MUSIC, COMEDY, AND FAMILY AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY PROGRAMMING. IN 2021, 76 EVENTS (INCLUDING 8 HELD OUTSIDE THE LENSIC THEATRE) AND 17 RECORDED AND LIVESTREAM EVENTS WERE PRESENTED.
THE LENSIC'S YOUTH IN THE PERFORMING ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM - THE LENSIC'S YOUTH IN THE PERFORMING ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM HAS HAD A TWENTY-YEAR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO BRING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN TO DAYTIME PERFORMANCES, PROVIDING WHAT IS FOR MANY CHILDREN THEIR FIRST THEATER EXPERIENCE. THE THEATER RUNS A TECHNICAL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM FOR LOCAL HIGH-SCHOOL YOUTH, WHICH PROVIDES SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO THE PROGRAM'S GRADUATES. THE EDUCATION PROGRAM, FUTURE VOICES OF NEW MEXICO, ALSO INCLUDES AN ANNUAL FILM AND PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ACROSS THE STATE. IN 2021, 50 NEW MEXICO SCHOOLS VIEWED THE VIRTUAL EDUCATION EVENTS, SERVING MORE THAN 13,500 K-12 STUDENTS.
