ADULT AND SENIOR COMPETITION: LEAGUE PARTICIPATION DURING THE 2021 YEAR FOR UNIQUE PARTICIPANTS WAS 5486 INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO AND EL PASO TX. WE HAD A TOTAL OF 11,439 LEAGUE REGISTRATIONS FOR THE 2021 YEAR IN THOSE SAME AREAS. WE ALSO HELD 6 SECTION LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2021, THE SOUTHWEST TRI-LEVEL INVITATIONAL IN JANUARY, 2021 IN PHOENIX AZ; THE SOUTHWEST 40 & OVER ADULT SECTIONAL IN TUCSON, AZ IN JUNE 2021 AND THE SOUTHWEST 18 & OVER ADULT SECTIONAL IN ALBUQUERQUE, NM IN AUGUST 2021 AND THE SOUTHWEST ADULT 55 & OVER SECTIONAL IN EL PASO, TX IN SEPTEMBER 2021 AND THE SOUTHWEST MIXED DOUBLES 40 & OVER AND 18 & OVER IN SURPRISE, AZ IN SEPTEMBER OF 2021 AND FINALLY THE SOUTHWEST ADULT 65 & OVER INVITATIONAL IN TUCSON AZ IN DECEMBER 2021. ALL AREAS RAN REGULAR USTA LEAGUE SEASONS SIMILAR TO 2019 THROUGHOUT THE CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR.2021 REPRESENTED A VERY SUCCESSFUL REBOUND FROM THE DROP IN THE NUMBER OF TOURNAMENTS BEING HELD DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS IN 2020. 2019 WAS THE BIGGEST YEAR FOR ADULT TOURNAMENT PARTICIPATION IN THE PAST 10 YEARS WITH 7,338 TOTAL REGISTRATIONS. 2021 WE SAW A TOTAL OF 6,857 REGISTRATIONS WITH FEWER EVENTS BEING HELD THAN IN 2019. 2022, AS MORE EVENTS CONTINUE TO COME BACK, WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE PARTICIPATION GROWTH IN ADULT TOURNAMENTS.
COMMUNITY TENNIS AND DIVERSITY: THE USTA SOUTHWEST COMMUNITY TENNIS DEPARTMENT SUPPORTS SEVERAL PROGRAMS INCLUDING SCHOOL TENNIS FOR BOTH IN SCHOOL PE CLASSES AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, CAMPUS KIDS DAYS (COMMUNITY EVENTS SURROUNDING COLLEGE TENNIS MATCHES) NJTL CHAPTERS (NATIONAL JR. TENNIS AND LEARNING NETWORK), JR. TEAM TENNIS (TENNIS LEAGUE FOR JUNIOR PLAYERS), TENNIS ON CAMPUS (COLLEGE RECREATIONAL LEAGUE), YOUNG ADULT SOCIAL PLAY, PRO CIRCUIT COMMUNITY SUPPORT, AND WHEELCHAIR AND ADAPTIVE TENNIS PROGRAMS. THIS SUPPORT COMES IN THE FORM OF EDUCATIONAL TRAINING, EQUIPMENT, AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT.THE TENNIS ON CAMPUS PROGRAM SUPPORTS SEVEN UNIVERSITIES AND OVER 500 COLLEGE PLAYERS. IN 2021, WE DISTRIBUTED OVER $9,000 IN COMMUNITY FUNDING GRANTS. WE ALSO PROVIDED A VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS COACH WORKSHOP SERIES IN EARLY 2021. THIS TOOK PLACE OVER SEVERAL WEEKS WITH GUEST SPEAKERS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. THE SERIES PROVIDED EDUCATION AND RESOURCES TO 70 COACHES FROM ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST SECTION.
JUNIOR COMPETITION: THERE WERE 144 JUNIOR EVENTS IN 2021 ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST SECTION WITH THE SECTION BEING THE PROVIDERS FOR NEARLY 50% OF THESE EVENTS. THE OFFERINGS WERE FOR ADVANCED, INTERMEDIATE, AND BEGINNER PLAYERS 7-18 YEARS OF AGE. WE PROVIDED PLAYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL PLAYERS ALONG THE JUNIOR PATHWAY THAT MEET THEIR NEEDS AND PLAYING ABILITIES. WE PROVIDED MORE LOCAL PLAY OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS THE SECTION TO HAVE ENOUGH LOCAL COMPETITION OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE THAT ARE NOT COMFORTABLE TRAVELING AS WELL AS FOR THOSE THAT ARE NOT AT THE LEVEL TO TRAVEL TO COMPETE. WE WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL IN HOSTING SAFELY RUN EVENTS ACROSS THE SECTION COMPARED TO 2020 WITH ONLY 80 OFFERINGS.
