COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT IS THE HEART OF OUR POWER BUILDING STRATEGY. THIS TEAM LEADS COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT EFFORTS, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE AND RAPID RESPONSE PROGRAMS. WE SERVED OVER 150,000 HOT MEALS AND 50,000 UNITS OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT TO OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH DRIVE-THROUGH DISTRIBUTION DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE PANDEMIC. WE GREW OUR PARTNERSHIPS AND ALLIANCE TO SUPPORT THE RAPID RESPONSE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC AND RELATED HEALTH/WELLNESS NEEDS. WE BROUGHT COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING TO OUR COMMUNITY WITH OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHTS, COMMUNITY RALLIES AND EVENTS, OUTDOOR PLAY DAY AND COMMUNITY MEALS.
ECONOMIC CAREER AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IS THE HEART OF OUR STRONG ECONOMY BUILDING STRATEGY. THIS TEAM LEADS MARKET DEVELOPMENT, BUSINESS SUPPORT AND CAREER NAVIGATION. WE LAUNCHED THE AKOMA CERTIFIED FARMERS MARKET WHICH ALLOWED VENDORS TO CONTINUE THEIR BUSINESS OUTDOORS DURING THE PANDEMIC. THIS RESOURCE HAS SUPPORTED HUNDREDS OF LOCAL AND SMALL BUSINESSES. WE ORGANIZED A BLACK AND ALLY ECONOMY NETWORK OF FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROVIDERS TO SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS, ENTREPRENEURS, ARTISTS, MAKERS AND CREATIVES.
NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT IS THE HEART OF OUR PLACE KEEPING STRATEGY. THIS TEAM LEADS COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF BLACK CULTURAL HUBS AND DISTRICTS AND PROVIDES NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES AND SUPPORT. WE ACTIVATED LIBERATION PARK OUTDOOR BLACK CULTURAL ZONE HUB VIA A LICENSE AGREEMENT WITH THE CITY OF OAKLAND. WE INSTALLED ART, GARDEN AND LANDSCAPING TO CONVERT THIS FORMERLY ABANDONED LOT INTO A THRIVING CULTURAL CENTER. WE ALSO BEGAN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE OUTDOOR ROLLER SKATING RINK AT LIBERATION PARK. WE WERE ABLE TO CRAFT AND SUBMIT A SUCCESSFUL BID TO ACQUIRE THIS SITE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF 120 UNITS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND A MARKET, EVENT AND MUSIC HALL -- SLATED FOR DEVELOPMENT BEGINNING 2024/25.
