CHARLESTON OPERA THEATER, INC.'S PURPOSES OF THE CORPORATION ARE:CHARLESTON OPERA THEATER IS COMMITTED TO A PROMINENT, YEAR-ROUND, PROFESSIONAL OPERA PRESENCE IN OUR CITY AND THE SURROUNDING LOWCOUNTRY. WE PLACE HIGH VALUE ON THE ADVANCEMENT OF ACOUSTIC VOCAL TRADITIONS, THROUGH QUALITY PERFORMANCES, EDUCATION, MENTORSHIP, TRAINING AND THE EXPOSURE OF THE ART FORM TO NEW AUDIENCES, THROUGH COMMUNITY OUTREACH, PERFORMANCES AND EVENTS.

L'ELISIR D'AMORE- OUR FIRST MAJOR SEASON OFFERING WAS A PRODUCTION OF DONIZETTI'S OPERA L'ELISIR D'AMORE. THE TWO PERFORMANCES WERE HELD AT THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON SOTTILE THEATRE ON OCTOBER 6 AND 8, 2023. THIS FULL-SCALE PRODUCTION FEATURED AN INTERNATIONAL CAST OF FIVE SOLOISTS, A 32-PIECE ORCHESTRA, CHORUS, COSTUMES AND SCENERY. THE CHORUS FOR THIS PRODUCTION WAS SOURECED USING LOCAL TALENT. SCENERY WAS ALSO CONSTRUCTED BY A LOCAL CONTRACTOR.
CLASSICAL CABARET- CLASSICAL SONGS IN A CABARET STYLE FORMAT. THIS PERFORMANCE WAS ON MARCH 5, 2024 AND TOOK PLACE AT THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON SOTTILE THEATRE. IT WAS A SOLD-OUT EVENT WITH JUST OVER 200 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE. THE AUDIENCE WAS SEATED ON FOLDING CHAIRS ON THE STAGE AND FACED OUT TO THE AUDITORIUM. THE 7 PERFORMERS (6 SIXERS AND 1 PIANIST) PERFORMED FACING THE SEATED AUDIENCE WITH THEIR BACKS TO THE AUDITORIUM TO CREATE A MORE INTIMATE PERFORMANCE STYLE. THE PERFORMANCE FEATURED SONG REPERTOIRE WRITTEN BY COMPOSERS PRIMARILY ASSOCIATED WITH OPERA AS WELL AS SOME OF THE ARTISTS PERSONAL SELECTIONS.
MASTER CLASS- TONY AWARD WINNING PLAY BY TERRANCE MCNALLY. THIS WORK IS FICTIONAL STORY BASED UPON THE MASTER CLASSES GIVEN AT THE JULLIARD SCHOOL BY FAMED OPERA DIVA MARIA CALLAS. WHILE IT IS A TRADITIONAL PLAY, IT DOES CONTAIN OPERA SINGING WITHIN IT. IT WAS PRESENTED AT THE CANNON STREET ARTS CENTER AS PART OF THE PICCOLO SPOLETO FESTIVAL IN CHARLESTON, SC WITH 4 PERFORMANCES: MAY 25, 26, 28 AND 29, 2024. 2 PERFORMANCES WERE SOLD OUT AND 2 NEARLY SO. IT WAS A CAST OF 3 SINGERS, A PIANIST, A STAGEHAND AND MARIA CALLAS. PICCOLO SPOLETO FESTIVAL FOCUSES ON LOCAL PRESENTERS AND FRIENDLY TICKET PRICING.
