CRITICAL NEEDS (MARSHALL FIRE & COVID): IN DECEMBER 2021, THE PURPOSE OF THE EXISTING CRITICAL NEEDS FUND EXPANDED WHEN THE MARSHALL FIRE DESTROYED OVER 1,000 HOMES, DISRUPTING THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. IMPACT ON EDUCATION PROVIDED MORE THAN 6,000 STUDENTS WITH INTENSIVE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT, AWARDED $50,000 IN DIRECT CASH ASSISTANCE TO IMPACTED BVSD STAFF, REPLACED $60,000 OF ACADEMIC, ATHLETIC, AND MUSIC MATERIALS, PROVIDED 300 DISPLACED FAMILIES WITH TRANSPORTATIONS STIPENDS TO HELP GET STUDENTS TO SCHOOL, PROVIDED 600 BACKPACKS FILLED WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES, AND PROVIDED $50,000 IN GIFT CARDS AND COMFORT KITS TO 900 IMPACTED STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. THE CRITICAL NEEDS FUND ALSO PROVIDED SUPPORT TO ADDRESS THE IMPACTS OF THE PANDEMIC-RELATED SCHOOL CLOSURES ON STUDENT LEARNING AND MENTAL HEALTH.
PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES (ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY FUND, SUMMER SHUFFLE, CAREER READINESS ACADEMY, SCHOLARSHIPS): OUR WORK TO SUPPORT STUDENTS FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD TO COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS AND AT EACH STEP ALONG THE WAY WAS A MAJOR INVESTMENT IN THE 21-22 FISCAL YEAR. IN SUMMER 2021, 160 RISING BVSD KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS WITH IDENTIFIED RISK FACTORS WERE ABLE TO ACCESS 6 WEEKS OF SUMMER INSTRUCTION TO ENSURE THEY ARRIVED AT SCHOOL AS PREPARED AS THEIR PEERS. IN ADDITION TO AWARDING $24,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS, OUR FIRST CAREER READINESS ACADEMY ENSURED THAT 20 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COULD ACCESS PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND CAREER GUIDANCE FROM LOCAL PROFESSIONALS. WE ALSO INVESTED OVER $150,000 THROUGH OUR ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY FUND THAT EDUCATORS REQUESTED IN THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR. THESE PAID FOR NEEDS RANGING FROM TUTORING AND STEM KITS TO INSTRUMENT REPAIR AND NEW BOOKS FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIES.
CRAYONS TO CALCULATORS: THE CRAYONS TO CALCULATORS PROGRAM PROVIDES NEW BACKPACKS AND SUPPLIES TO NEARLY 11,000 STUDENTS IN NEED IN THE BOULDER VALLEY AND ST. VRAIN VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICTS AT THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
