RESEARCH AND CLINICAL CARE: SUPPORT FROM THE FOUNDATION AND THE GUILD PROVIDES ESSENTIAL FUNDING FOR RESEARCH INTO THE PATHOGENESIS AND PREVENTION OF TYPE I DIABETES BY UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO FACULTY AT THE BARBARA DAVIS CENTER. THE LONG-TERM SUPPORT BY THE FOUNDATION HAS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS SYSTEM, BREAKTHROUGH STEM CELL RESEARCH, STUDIES INVOLVING THE RELATION OF TYPE I DIABETES TO OTHER AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES SUCH AS CELIAC DISEASE, AND DEVELOPMENT OF A PROGRAM TO TEST THE PROBABILITY OF A CHILD DEVELOPING DIABETES.
PUBLIC EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICE: THE FOUNDATION AND GUILD ALSO PROVIDE EDUCATION TO THE COLORADO COMMUNITY THROUGH SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, PROVIDERS, AND CITIZENS BY DISBURSING INFORMATION ON DIABETES, ITS SYMPTOMS, AND HOW TO HELP A PERSON EXPERIENCING BLOOD SUGAR REACTIONS. MONTHLY SUPPORT GROUPS PROVIDE AN OUTLET TO CONNECT INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IMPACTED BY DIABETES. SUPPORT FROM THE FOUNDATION ALLOWS THE CENTER TO PROVIDE CARE AND DIABETES SUPPLIES AT NO COST TO OVER 30% OF ITS PATIENTS WHO ARE UNINSURED OR UNDERINSURED. THE FOUNDATION HOSTS PATIENT AND CLINICAL CONFERENCES ANNUALLY TO PROVIDE EDUCATION ON HOW TO TREAT, CARE FOR, AND SUPPORT PATIENTS WITH DIABETES. THE FOUNDATION ALSO PUBLISHES MATERIALS TO HELP EDUCATE PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN MANAGING DIABETES.
