ANNUAL WINTERNIGHTS VIKING FESTIVAL - OUR MAIN EVENT HELD ANNUALLY TO HONOR SHARE LEARN AND PROMOTE VIKINGS AND EARLY NORSE CULTURE AND BELIEFS. DONATIONS FROM IT GO TO THE NORTHERN NJ VETERANS MEMORIAL CEMETERY AND TO OUR FOUNDATION SO THAT IT CAN CONTINUE TO HOLD THIS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. THIS YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE A DONATION OF $314 TO NNJVMC. A VIKING ENCAMPMENT WAS BUILT INCLUDING A FORGE AN IRON SMELTING FURNACE A LONGHOUSE FIRE PIT AND A HAND GRAIN MILL FOR GRINDING BERRIES AND GRAINS. EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS AND LEAFLETS WERE PROVIDED INCLUDING 3 REPLICA RUNESTONE MONUMENTS A LARGE YGGDRASIL MURAL MULTIPLE TAPESTRIES A LARGE BANNER WITH VIKING RUNES ALPHABET ON IT ALONG WITH MULTIPLE REPLICA ARTIFACTS SUCH AS AXES WOODEN WEDGES AND LARGE WOODEN MALLETS THAT WERE USED TO SPLIT LOGS THEN TRIM THEM DOWN TO MAKE LONG SHIPS. EDUCATIONAL TALKS AND DISCUSSIONS WERE HELD AS WELL AS VIKING FIGHTING REENACTMENTS. CHILDREN'S AREA WITH ACTIVITIES WAS SET UP.
WE ADDED TO OUR COMMUNITY GOALS THIS YEAR BY HOLDING TWO MARSHMALLOW MADNESS EVENTS. THE FIRST WAS HELD ON 11 26 WITH THE SECOND ON 12 29. UTILIZING THE FIRE PIT FROM WNF WE WERE ABLE TO BURN AVAILABLE LOGS PROVIDE SKEWERS AND MARSHMALLOWS AS WELL AS SEATING FOR FAMILIES OR INDIVIDUALS TO MEET ROAST MARSHMALLOWS AND SHARE STORIES AND TALES WITH OTHERS.
TOWNSHIP MEMORIAL DAY PARADE HOSTED BY OUR LOCAL VFW POST WAS HELD AGAIN THIS YEAR. WE RECORDED IT ON TWO SEPARATE VIDEO CAMERAS COMBINED AND EDITED THE VIDEO RECORDINGS AND THEN UPLOADED THE FINAL VIDEO FOR VIEWING BY RESIDENTS UNABLE TO ATTEND OR ANYONE ELSE VIA YOUTUBE WITH LINKS TO IT ON OUR WEBSITE.
WE ATTENDED SCANFEST A LARGE NON-PROFIT EVENT AT BUDD LAKE. THIS EVENT SHARES AND PROMOTES SCANDINAVIAN CULTURE AND HERITAGE. WE WERE ONE OF MANY NON-PROFIT SCANDINAVIAN ORGANIZATIONS AT IT IN ADDITION TO THE ORGANIZATION THAT HOSTS IT. OUR TABLE AREA INCLUDED INFORMATION ABOUT WNF AND OTHER ACTIVITIES WE PROVIDE. WE ALSO BROUGHT VIKING REPLICA ARTIFACTS LEAFLETS AND BOOKS EXAMPLES OF VIKING BREAD AND THE LIMESTONE GRAIN GRINDING HAND MILL. A DONATION BOX WAS PUT OUT FOR ATTENDEES. THIS EVENT ATTRACTS ABOUT 10K VISITORS WHICH ALLOWS US TO SHOWCASE VIKING CULTURE AND MORE TO MANY IN A VENUE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT PURPOSE.
