THE MISSION OF THE SAFETY FORCES SUPPORT CENTER IS TO INCORPORATE ITS SPECIALIZED UNDERSTANDING OF, AND EXPERIENCE IN, THE SAFETY PROFESSIONS TO PROVIDE CONFIDENTIAL EMOTIONAL, MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING, AND SPIRITUAL AND MATERIAL ASSISTANCE, FREE OF COST TO LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIRE SAFETY PERSONNEL, EMS, DISPATCHERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. TO FULFILL THIS MISSION SFSC OFFERS CORE SERVICES INCLUDING COUNSELING, SUPPORT, EDUCATION, LAW ENFORCEMENT/SAFETY FORCES ADVOCACY, AND EMERGENCY SUPPORT DURING TRAUMATIC INCIDENTS.

COUNSELING & CRISIS INTERVENTION - LAW ENFORCEMENT, FIRE PERSONNEL, EMS AND DISPATCHERS EXPERIENCE INTENSE, UNIQUE JOB STRESSORS, WHICH IMPACT THEIR PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND WHICH REQUIRE SPECIALIZED SUPPORT. THESE WELL-DOCUMENTED, ONGOING STRESSORS RESULT IN A HIGH LEVEL OF DIVORCE, ALCOHOLISM, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, PTSD, AND SUICIDE. IN 2021 THE SAFETY FORCES SUPPORT CENTER (SFSC) PROVIDED FREE CRISIS INTERVENTION FOR 41 FIRST RESPONDERS FOLLOWING CRITICAL INCIDENTS (FIRE FATALITIES, POLICE OFFICER SHOOTINGS, SUICIDES) AND CONFIDENTIAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING TO 76 ACTIVE/RETIRED SAFETY FORCES PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES.
TRAINING & PEER SUPPORT - SFSC COORDINATES A TEAM OF TRAINED PEER SUPPORT MEMBERS WHO PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH "FIRST AID" FOR THEIR COLLEAGUES. THIS VOLUNTEER GROUP IS TRAINED IN CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS MANAGEMENT (CISM) TO RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF DISTRESS IN PEERS, RESPOND APPROPRIATELY AND, IF NECESSARY, REFER THAT COLLEAGUE FOR FOLLOW UP MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTION. IN 2021, SFSC PROVIDED TRAINING IN CISM TO 78 HEALTH-RELATED PROFESSIONALS AND CERTIFIED 25 INDIVIDUALS IN CISM TRAINING.
CHAPLAINCY & HOLIDAY OUTREACH - IN 2021, SFSC ALSO SERVED 1,690 INDIVIDUALS WITH CHAPLAINCY SERVICES (ATTENDING FUNERALS/CALLING HOURS; OUTREACH TO RETIREES; HOSPITAL VISITATIONS). IN DECEMBER 200 GIFT BASKETS WERE DELIVERED TO RETIRED AND DISABLED SAFETY FORCES PERSONNEL, WIDOWS, OR THOSE EXPERIENCING LIFE CHALLENGES, AND APPROXIMATELY 450 CHRISTMAS EVE MEALS WERE PROVIDED TO FIRST RESPONDERS SERVING ON DUTY AND AWAY FROM FAMILY AND LOVED ONES.
