THE MISSION OF THE CAROLINA MEADOWS FOUNDATION IS TO SOLICIT AND RECEIVE GIFTS, GRANTS, BEQUESTS, AND CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THE SUPPORT OF CAROLINA MEADOWS, INC. IN ORDER TO ENHANCE OR EXTEND ITS MISSION, PROGRAMS, SERVICES, AND FACILITIES. THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED A GRANT TO THE SOUTHERN ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM (SOHP) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL IN NORTH CAROLINA FOR $18,000. THE GRANT SUPPORTED THE RESIDENT INITIATED ORAL HISTORY PORTION OF "PANDEMIC AT THE MEADOWS ORAL HISTORY PROJECT". THIS WAS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CAROLINA MEADOWS, INC. AND THE SOHP. THE PROJECT'S GOAL WAS TO CAPTURE THE STORIES, MEMORIES AND LESSONS LEARNED AT CAROLINA MEADOWS OVER THE PANDEMIC EXPERIENCE ON THE LIVES AND FUTURES OF THE RESIDENTS AND EMPLOYEES AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE PROJECT INCLUDED IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS OF RESIDENTS AND STAFF ABOUT THE IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC ON THEIR LIVES AND WORK, TO BE ARCHIVED IN THE UNIVERSITY'S WILSON LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES AT CAROLINA MEADOWS. THE PROJECT IS INTENDED TO INFORM OTHER RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES WHO CONFRONT SIMILAR ISSUES IN THE FUTURE WITH HOW TO SURVIVE SUCH A DISASTER. THE FOUNDATION HAS AN EMPLOYEE MEMORIAL FUND WHICH RECOGNIZES AND HONORS THE DEDICATION OF VALUED STAFF WHO HAVE DIED. IN 2021, THE FOUNDATION AWARDED $2,200 TO SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS THROUGH THE MARKUS-JAMAL WEBB SCHOLARSHIP FUND. MARKUS WEBB WAS A VALUED EMPLOYEE IN OUR DINING DEPARTMENT WHO TRAGICALLY DIED AT A YOUNG AGE. THE SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORTS STUDENTS AT HIS PAST HIGH SCHOOL WHO WANT TO STUDY MUSIC. THE FOUNDATION HAS AN EMPLOYEE EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM WHICH ASSISTS EMPLOYEES WITH UNEXPECTED CRITICAL EXPENSES RELATED TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. IN 2021, MULTIPLE AWARDS WERE MADE DIRECTLY TO BUSINESSES TO COVER EMPLOYEE EXPENSES RELATED TO CHILDCARE, UTILITIES, HEALTH CARE AND HOUSING COSTS.FOUNDATION ALSO ACCEPTED DONATIONS FOR SPECIFIC FUNDS THAT ENHANCE THE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING SUPPORT OF EMPLOYEE TEAM MEMBERS, AND CONTINUED TO SHARPEN MESSAGES, BROADEN THE COMMUNITY REACH, AND BUILD TOWARDS MATERIAL TO DESCRIBE INTENDED POTENTIAL USES OF FUNDS FOR EXPENDING OF CHARITABLE PURPOSES.
