THROUGH CONVERSATIONS AND ACTIVE COLLABORATIONS WITH PARTNERS ON-THE GROUND, WE FILL EVIDENCE GAPS BY USING BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH, CLINICAL RESEARCH, IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH TO ACHIEVE PROOF OF CONCEPT FOR NEW MODELS OF CARE. WE USE THIS INFORMATION TO INFLUENCE CHANGE AND ADVOCATE FOR IMPROVEMENTS IN POLICY AND PRACTICE.

GYNUITY HEALTH PROJECTS AND ITS PARTNERS IN THE U.S. AND IN MEXICO PROVED FEASIBLE A TELEMEDICINE APPROACH FOR PROVIDING MEDICAL ABORTION DURING THE PANDEMIC AND BEYOND. RIGOROUS DATA FROM THESE STUDIES PAVED THE PATH FOR TESTING AND INTRODUCING THIS SERVICE DELIVERY OPTION IN OTHER LOCATIONS, INCLUDING IN ECUADOR, MOLDOVA, AND THE REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA. WE CONDUCTED AN INNOVATIVE STUDY TO DETERMINE THE POSSIBILITY OF SCREENING FOR GESTATIONAL AGE USING A BLOOD OR URINE TEST AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO PRE-ABORTION ULTRASOUND TO DETERMINE MA ELIGIBILITY. WE ADVANCED OUR WORK ON PERIOD PILLS (ALSO KNOWN AS "MISSED OR "LATE" PERIOD PILLS) AND INITIATED RESEARCH ON NEXT GENERATION ABORTIFACIENTS TO ADDRESS THE ABSENCE OF MIFEPRISTONE AND INCREASE OPTIONS AVAILABLE THAT COULD HELP EXPAND ACCESS TO ABORTION. WE PUBLISHED SEVERAL NEW JOURNAL ARTICLES THAT SUMMARIZE THE RESULTS FROM THIS WORK AND CREATED AND SHARED ONLINE RESOURCES TO SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON ABORTION. WE ALSO REMAINED FOCUSED ON EXPLORING PROMISING INTERVENTIONS AND CARE FOR TREATMENT OF OBSTETRIC COMPLICATIONS WHERE HEALTHCARE INEQUITIES EXIST, AND MATERNAL MORTALITY IS HIGH. WE CONTINUED TO WORK WITH PARTNERS ON A LARGE, RANDOMIZED TRIAL UNDERWAY IN INDIA THAT COMPARES USE OF ORAL MISOPROSTOL TO INTRAVENOUS OXYTOCIN FOR INDUCTION OF LABOR IN WOMEN WHO EXPERIENCE HYPERTENSION DURING PREGNANCY AND HAVE UNDERGONE CERVICAL PREPARATION WITH ORAL MISOPROSTOL. WE ALSO ADVANCED PLANS WITH PARTNERS ON THE INTRODUCTION AND TESTING OF A NEW DIAGNOSTIC SCREENING TOOL FOR PREECLAMPSIA IN ANTENATAL CARE CLINICS IN TWO AFRICAN COUNTRIES.
