SOLUTIONS IN HOMETOWN CONNECTIONS (SHC) ENGAGES REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES.FAMILY-FRIENDLY PROGRAMS FOSTER CONFIDENCE AND INDEPENDENCE. A NETWORK OF VOLUNTEER TUTORS ANDCOMMUNITY GROUPS COMPLIMENT PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WITH PERSONALIZED SUPPORT.

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING (ELL) PROGRAM IS A THOUGHTFUL AND EFFECTIVE TWO-PRONGED SOLUTION THAT ADDRESSES THE PROBLEM OF LOW ENGLISH LITERACY RATES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BY REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT WOMEN AND THE LACK OF KINDERGARTEN READINESS OF THEIR YOUNG CHILDREN. THE ADULT PROGRAM CREATES A WARM AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT WHERE STUDENTS CAN EFFECTIVELY LEARN. AS A RESULT OF THE PANDEMIC, THIS PROGRAM TRANSITIONED TO A REMOTE PLATFORM IN 2020. MORE THAN 80 VOLUNTEERS HAVE TUTORED STUDENTS OF THE ADULT ELLP. IN 2021, 247 UNIQUE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE ADULT ELLP. THE ELLP CHILDRENS PROGRAM, SHC PRE-SCHOOL, IS FOR PARTICIPANTS AGES 0-5. THIS PROGRAM ENGAGES THE YOUNGEST LEARNERS IN DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES TO HELP PREPARE THEM FOR EVENTUAL TRANSITION TO FORMAL SCHOOL. THE PROGRAM TAKES PLACE ON ZOOM TUESDAYS AND THRUSDAYS FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR. IN 2021, 25 CHILDREN ENROLLED IN SHC PRE-SCHOOL.
THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL UNIFORM AND SUPPLY DRIVE PROGRAM IS AN ANNUAL PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES A COMPLETE UNIFORM AND SCHOOL SUPPLY ITEMS TO CHILDREN FROM REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT FAMILIES. IN 2021, 319 COMPLETE UNIFORMS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES WERE DISTRIBUTED INDIVIDUALLY TO FAMILIES.
THE WELCOME TEAMS PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2021 IN RESPONSE TO THE INFLUX OF AFGHAN EVACUEES ARRIVING TO THE DC, METRO AREA BEGINNING IN AUGUST. WELCOME TEAMS ARE GROUPS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO WELCOME AND HELP NEWCOMERS ADJUST TO THEIR NEW LIVES IN THE US. OVERSIGHT AND GUIDANCE ARE PROVIDED BY SHC STAFF WHO, IN 2021, ENTERED INTO A PARTNERSHIP WITH CHURCH WORLD SERVICES (CWS) AS AN AFGHAN PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE (APA) COMMUNITY PARTNER CO-SPONSOR.
