THE PAL PROVIDES FREE ACCESS TO MENTORING AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS FOR LOW-INCOME YOUTH IN THE URBAN CORE OF KANSAS CITY, KS. AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO CREATE POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH POLICE OFFICERS AND ADULT MENTORS THAT HELP KIDS AVOID CRIME, VIOLENCE AND NEGATIVE INFLUENCES WHILE DEVELOPING SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE. OUR INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS SUCH AS DRIVER'S EDUCATION, FITNESS, GUN SAFETY, GARDENING & HEALTHY COOKING, LOW-RIDER BIKE CLUB, ART AND ACADEMIC TUTORING HELP DISADVANTAGED YOUTH AGES 8-18 DEVELOP MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT. PAL KIDS LEARN VALUABLE PRACTICAL SKILLS AS WELL AS COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK SOFT SKILLS THAT WILL PREPARE THEM TO BE GOOD MEMBERS OF THE WORKFORCE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

THE PAL SERVED THAN 1,200 LOW-INCOME YOUTH, AGES 8-18, WHO PARTICIPATED IN OUR PROGRAMS IN 2023. MORE THAN 800 YOUTH ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN THE PAL'S HEALTH-RELATED PROGRAMS, INCLUDING FITNESS & BOXING, ARCHERY, GARDENING, NUTRITION AND HEALTHY COOKING. STUDENTS SPEND FOUR EVENINGS EACH WEEK IN THESE PROGRAMS AT NO COST TO THEM OR THEIR FAMILIES. ADDITIONALLY, THE PAL SERVED APPROXIMATELY 5,000 FREE MEALS TO LOW-INCOME STUDENTS AND FAMILIES TO ADDRESS THE FOOD INSECURITY NEEDS IN THE URBAN CORE.
THE PAL HAS INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED PROGRAMS AROUND YOUTH AND COMMUNITY SAFETY, AND THESE PROGRAMS ARE GROWING RAPIDLY. MORE THAN 200 PAL TEENS RECEIVED CERTIFIED DRIVER'S EDUCATION AT THE PAL AND EARNED THEIR KANSAS PERMITS AND LICENSES. THE CERTIFIED DRIVING INSTRUCTORS WERE KCKPD POLICE OFFICERS, WHO BUILT POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS WHILE PROVIDING MENTORING AND DRIVING INSTRUCTION. THESE STUDENTS PERFORMED 6,000 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE (IN LIEU OF PAYMENT FOR DRIVER'S ED COURSES). ANOTHER PROGRAM BASED ON GUN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN THE URBAN CORE PAIRED POLICE OFFICERS WITH MIDDLE-SCHOOL AND HIGH-SCHOOL YOUTH TO LEARN ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF VIOLENCE PREVENTION AT HOME AND IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND THE SAFE HANDLING OF WEAPONS SHOULD THEY ENCOUNTER THEM.
PAL STUDENTS ALSO EMBRACED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES WITH PROGRAMS INCLUDING ART, COMPUTER SKILLS, ACADEMIC TUTORING AND OUR LOW-RIDER BICYCLE BUILDING PROGRAM. MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS DEVELOPED NEW SKILLS, WITH MANY IMPROVING ACADEMIC COMPETENCIES BY MORE THAN A GRADE LEVEL.
