DISABILITY VOICES UNITED IS DIRECTED BY AND FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. WE ADVOCATE FOR CHOICE AND CONTROL OVER OUR LIVES, MEANINGFUL OUTCOMES THAT MATTER TO US, AND SYSTEMS THAT ARE EQUITABLE AND ACCOUNTABLE TO US.

EDUCATION & TRAININGIN 2021, DVU TRAINED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, FAMILIES, AND PROFESSIONALS. DVU LED THE EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM TO TRAIN SELF-ADVOCATES AND FAMILY MEMBERS, PARTICULARLY PEOPLE OF COLOR, ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS. DVU TRAINED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ON THE SELF-DETERMINATION PROGRAM THROUGH BI-WEEKLY MEETINGS AND AN ANNUAL CONFERENCE. DVU LED MONTHLY TRAININGS ON ACCESSING COMMUNICATION SUPPORTS. ON THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, DVU LED WEBINARS FOR THE DISABILITY COMMUNITY, RAN VACCINE CLINICS WITH SPECIALLY TRAINED PROVIDERS, AND TRAINED COVID CONTACT TRACERS ON INTERACTIONS WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
NARRATIVE CHANGEIN 2021, DISABILITY VOICES UNITED LED EFFORTS TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE AROUND A RANGE OF DISABILITY ISSUES AND ELIMINATE SOCIETAL ABLEISM. DVU RAN EFFORTS TO ENSURE THAT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES HAD EARLY ACCESS TO COVID-19 VACCINES THROUGH PRESS CONFERENCES AND OP-EDS IN MAJOR MEDIA OUTLETS. DVU LED PROTESTS AGAINST AND CALLED FOR REFORMS OF THE LA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT AFTER A DEAF AND AUTISTIC MAN WAS SHOT AND PARALYZED WHILE SITTING CALMLY IN HIS HOME. DVU ALSO ISSUED A REPORT ON RACIAL AND ETHNIC DISPARITIES IN THE REGIONAL CENTER SYSTEM.
ADVOCACYIN 2021, DISABILITY VOICES UNITED EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ABOUT AND ADVOCATED FOR SYSTEMIC CHANGES IN THE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES SYSTEM, INCLUDING ELIMINATING RACIAL AND GEOGRAPHIC DISPARITIES AND INCREASING OVERSIGHT AND TRANSPARENCY. DVU ALSO SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATED FOR CREATING AN OMBUDSPERSON FOR THE SELF-DETERMINATION PROGRAM. DVU STAFF AND BOARD TESTIFIED BEFORE THE CALIFORNIA SENATE AND ASSEMBLY BUDGET COMMITTEES AS WELL AS THE LA COUNTY SHERIFF'S CIVILIAN OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE.
