Part 3 - Line 4a
IN SEPTEMBER 2021, BOARD MEMBERS ATTENDED A VIRTUAL CONVENTION OF THE SELECTIVE MUTISM ASSOCIATION. KEYNOTE SPEAKER ADDRESSED ISSURES FACED BY YOUNG ADULTS WITH SM AND TALKED ABOUT STRATEGIES TO HELP THOSE WITH THIS ANXIETY DISORDER. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, BOARD MEMBERS CONTINUED WITH DOING WEEKLY ZOOM MEETINGS TO HELP PARTICIPANTS IMPROVE CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS, AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER EMOTIONALLY. ONE PARTICIPANT IS FROM THE UK AND SHE IS LOOKING INTO RECRUITING OTHER ADULTS WITH SM TO JOIN OUR GROUP TO ENLARGE OUR POTENTIAL CONVERSATIONAL PARTNERS. BOARD MEMBERS RECRUITED TWO ROTARIANS TO JOIN THE ZOOM AND GIVE THE SM PARTICIPANTS OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO UNFAMILIAR PEOPLE AS A FORM OF EXPOSURE TRAINING. IT IS THE HOPE THAT THE ROTARY CLUB COULD EMBRACE THIS ACTIVITY AS AN ONGOING PROJECT TO HELP THOSE WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY SPEAK COMFORTABLY WITH NEW PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE NONJUDGEMENTAL AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFICULTIES THEY HAVE. BOARD MEMBER TRAVELED TO EQUADOR IN JUNE TO ATTEND A MEETI
