THE EASTERN REGION ASSOCIATION OF FOREST AND NATURE SCHOOLS, INC. (ERAFANS) CONTINUES TO FULFILL OUR MISSION THROUGH NATURE-BASED EDUCATION AND PROGRAM INITIATIVES FOR TEACHERS, CHILDREN, AND FAMILIES. IN 2021, OUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE INCREASED ATTENDANCE FOR OUR NATURE-BASED TEACHER CERTIFICATION COURSES, GROWING DEMAND OF OUR ONLINE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, AND THE EXPANSION OF NOTCHCLIFF NATURE PROGRAMS. THE NATURE-BASED TEACHER CERTIFICATION IS A 36-HOUR COURSE THAT PROVIDES IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BEST PRACTICES IN NATURE-BASED EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION TO PREPARE TEACHERS FOR MEANINGFUL OUTDOOR LEARNING EXPERIENCES. THE CERTIFICATION IS OFFERED IN TIERED LEVELS I, II, AND III. WE CERTIFIED A TOTAL OF 396 TEACHERS IN 2021, WITH 279 ONLINE PARTICIPANTS AND 117 PARTICIPANTS JOINING US FOR LIVE TRAINING IN BALTIMORE, MD AND TOLEDO, OH. 355 PARTICIPANTS ATTENDED LEVEL I CERTIFICATION, 31 PARTICIPANTS ATTENDED LEVEL II AND 10 PARTICIPANTS ATTENDED OUR INAUGURAL LEVEL II COHORT.
NOTCHCLIFF NATURE PROGRAMS IS A COMMUNITY-BASED ARM OF PROGRAMMING OFFERED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH A LOCAL RETIREMENT COMMUNITY IN BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD. IN 2021, PROGRAMS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE FOREST PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AGES 3-5 YEARS OLD (31 CHILDREN) AND A HOMESCHOOL COOPERATIVE FOR CHILDREN AGES 5-8 YEARS OLD (10 CHILDREN). IN ADDITION, WE OFFERED LICENSED SUMMER NATURE CAMPS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SUMMER 2021 WITH 21 CHILDREN. NOTCHCLIFF PROVIDES A 'LAB SCHOOL' APPROACH TO CONTINUE LEARNING ABOUT THE NEEDS OF TEACHERS, CHILDREN, AND FAMILIES IN NATURE-BASED OUTDOOR LEARNING PROGRAMS.
OUR ONLINE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE FEE-BASED AND FREE ONLINE COURSES, WEBINARS, AND VIRTUAL GATHERINGS. MANY OF OUR ONLINE COURSES ARE ALSO APPROVED BY THE MARYLAND STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CLOCK HOURS. WE SAW INCREDIBLE ATTENDANCE FOR ALL ONLINE OFFERINGS WITH 476 ATTENDEES JOINING INTERACTIVE OR PRE-RECORDED VIRTUAL TRAINING AND 298 ATTENDEES JOINING FREE GUEST WEBINARS, ONLINE NETWORKING SESSIONS, AND OTHER ONLINE FORUMS. THERE WAS AN ADDITIONAL 279 ONLINE PARTICIPANTS (MENTIONED ABOVE) WHO ATTENDED OUR NATURE-BASED TEACHER CERTIFICATION COURSES ONLINE. IN TOTAL, 1,053 TEACHERS RECEIVED HIGH QUALITY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AROUND NATURE-BASED AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION TOPICS.
