YEAR-ROUND TUTORING AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS WITH THE LANSING SCHOOL DISTRICT - SERVING 27 YOUTH PARTICIPANTS AT LETTS COMMUNITY CENTER TWICE A WEEK FOR ACADEMIC TUTORING OR VIRTUALLY FOR 2 HOURS PER WEEK. PARTICIPANTS WERE PAIRED WITH TUTORS TO FOCUS ON COMPLETING HOMEWORK, UNDERSTANDING CONCEPTS WITH WHICH THE YOUTH MAY BE STRUGGLING, AND DEVELOPING A MENTORING RELATIONSHIP. THIS PROGRAM FOCUSES ON HELPING STUDENTS ACHIEVE PASSING GRADES IN ALL CLASSES IN ORDER TO BE PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE. 4,953 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A VARIETY OF TENNIS AND LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMS, INCLUDING LUNCH TIME TENNIS, GYM CLASSES, AND MID-DAY MOVERS.
SCHOOL YEAR TENNIS SERVING APPROXIMATELY 149 STUDENTS IN CONTINUING TENNIS PROGRAMMING AT SPARROW MICHIGAN ATHLETIC CLUB. TODD MARTIN DEVELOPMENT FUND STAFF FOCUS ON CONTINUING TENNIS SKILL PROGRESSION WITH STUDENTS WHO WERE WITH THE PROGRAM IN THE SUMMER SO THAT LEARNING WAS CONSISTENT THROUGH THE YEAR. SPORTSMANSHIP AND LEADERSHIP ARE STRESSED THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM. TODD MARTIN DEVELOPMENT FUND PARTNERED WITH RIDDLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO PROVIDE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING TWO DAYS A WEEK FOR TWO HOURS EACH DAY SERVING 18 YOUTH. PROGRAMMING FOCUSED ON TENNIS, ACADEMIC SUPPORT, AND LIFE SKILLS.
SUMMER TENNIS, LIFE SKILLS, AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - 280 PARTICIPANTS. PROGRAMS CONDUCTED INCLUDE LEARNING THE GAME OF TENNIS AND IMPROVING SKILLS, HEARING FROM NOTABLE COMMUNITY LEADERS, AND EXPLORING LEADERSHIP THEMES SUCH AS GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, EDUCATION AND GOAL SETTING, DIVERSITY, TEAMWORK, INNOVATIVE THINKING, HEALTHY EATING, AND EXERCISE. LETTS WEEK-DAY TENNIS PROGRAMMING SERVING 33 YOUTH AGES 6-10. THESE PROGRAMS UTILIZE MODIFIED TENNIS BALLS, SMALLER RACQUETS, AND SMALLER COURT DIMENSIONS TO PROVIDE A SUCCESSFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND LOTS OF FUN FOR PLAYERS. BALL, RACQUET AND COURT TRANSITIONS ARE BASED ON A NATURAL PROGRESSION IN TECHNIQUE, SKILL, ATHLETICISM, AND AGE.
