THE MISSION OF BIG SKY INSTITUTE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF NONPROFITS (BSI) IS TO BUILD MONTANA'S COMMUNITIES BY STRENGTHENING NONPROFITS AND EXPANDING PHILANTHROPY.

200 MONTANA NONPROFIT SECTOR DEVELOPMENT. DURING 2020, BSI CONTINUED TO OFFER SEMINARS, TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ON FUNDRAISING SKILLS THROUGH THE VARIOUS COMPONENT PROGRAMS OF BSI'S HELENA DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (HDI). MONTHLY MEETINGS OF HDI'S HELENA DEVELOPMENT ROUNDTABLE PROGRAM COMPONENT TYPICALLY RANGED BETWEEN 25 AND 30 NONPROFIT STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN TRAININGS AND DISCUSSIONS ON A DIVERSE RANGE OF FUNDRAISING TOPICS. BSI CONDUCTED SEMINARS ON THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ENDOWMENT DEVELOPMENT FOR INTERESTED NONPROFITS DURING THE WINTER AND SPRING, WITH A DOZEN NONPROFITS PARTICIPATING IN THE TRAININGS. THE ONGOING PANDEMIC UNDERCUT FUNDING FOR MANY NONPROFITS THAT HAD PLANNED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NEXT ROUND OF ENDOWMENT DEVELOPMENT SEMINARS THAT WERE SCHEDULED FOR THE FALL. THE SEMINARS WERE POSTPONED DUE TO THE NEED FOR NONPROFITS TO SHARPLY FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING TO MEET THEIR ANNUAL BUDGET. DURING THE WINTER AND SPRING, BSI WORKED ON ITS ANNUAL HELENA CELEBRATES COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY DINNER AND RECOGNITION EVENT, WHICH HONORS INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES AND FOUNDATIONS THAT ARE BROAD AND INCLUSIVE IN THEIR CHARITABLE GIVING AND GRANTMAKING. AN EXCELLENT SLATE OF AWARDEES WAS APPROVED, AND INITIAL GROUNDWORK WAS LAID FOR THE EVENT; HOWEVER, DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE NOVEMBER EVENT WAS POSTPONED TO 2021. THROUGH ITS ACCESS HELENA RESOURCES! PROGRAM COMPONENT, BSI WORKED ON DEVELOPING AND UPDATING HANDOUTS AND INFORMATIONAL MATERIALS TO HELP NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS AND NEW FUNDRAISING STAFF QUICKLY GET UP TO SPEED ON COMMUNITY RESOURCES THAT CAN HELP THEM BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR NEW JOBS.
800 INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES. DURING 2020, BSI CONTINUED A FISCAL SPONSORSHIP RELATIONSHIP WITH HELENA YOUNG PROFESSIONALS (HYP), SUPPORTING THEIR EFFORTS TO PLAN AND CONDUCT A SUMMIT/CONVENING IN HELENA FOR ALL THE LOCAL HYP CHAPTERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE SUMMIT WAS POSTPONED. BSI BEGAN A FISCAL SPONSORSHIP RELATIONSHIP WITH WATERSHED PROTECTION ADVOCATES OF NORTHWEST MONTANA, SUPPORTING THEIR RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY TO COMBAT AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES FROM ENTERING FLATHEAD LAKE.
