THE MISSION OF LITERACY CONNEXUS - WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN 2004 - IS TO HELP CHURCHES HELP PEOPLE WITH LITERACY NEEDS. FOUR MILLION ADULTS LIVING IN TEXAS QUALIFY FOR ADULT BASIC EDUCATION-MANY OF THESE NEED HELP WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION. ADDITIONALLY, LITERACY CONNEXUS HELPS CHURCHES ADDRESS THE LITERACY NEEDS OF CHILDREN FOR SCHOOL READINESS AND BEGINNING HOME LIBRARIES. WE PROVIDE TRAINING, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHURCHES ENGAGE IN LITERACY MINISTRY.

USING AN ORIGINAL MODEL KNOWN AS TEX (TEACHING ENGLISH WITH EXCELLENCE), A TEAM OF NINE EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEER LEADERS TRAIN APPROXIMATELY THREE HUNDRED NEW TEACHERS ANNUALLY. THESE VOLUNTEERS JOIN HUNDREDS OF OTHERS IN MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED CHURCHES IN TEXAS TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES. PARTICIPATING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS ARE COMPRISED OF REFUGEES,INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PERSONS, AND IMMIGRANTS. MORE THAN EIGHTY COUNTRIES ARE REPRESENTED IN CHURCHES AFFILIATED WITH LITERACY CONNEXUS ESL PROGRAMS. DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC WE SHIFTED OUR PROGRAMMING TO VIRTUAL TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR CHURCHES PROVIDING ELS INSTRUCTION.
WHAT'S FOR LUNCH? IS A PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY LITERACY CONNEXUS TO PROVIDE RESOURCES IN AN ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE SUMMER READING SLIDE. WHEN CHILDREN DO NOT CONTINUE READING THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER, THEY REGRESS IN THEIR LITERACY CAPACITY. MANY OF THESE CHILDREN RECEIVE FREE LUNCHES IN THE SUMMER. WE COLLABORATE WITH CHURCHES WHO PARTNER WITH FEEDING SITES. THESE CHURCHES ACT AS MOBILE LIBRARIES DURING MEAL TIMES, ENSURING THAT CHILDREN READ ENOUGH TO AVOID ENTERING THE SLIDE. LITERACY CONNEXUS HAS BEEN WORKING WITH PUBLIC HOUSING AUTHORITIES IN TEXAS TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO BOOKS FOR CHILDREN IN SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. IN THE SUMMER OF 2020, THIS PROGRAM WAS ON HIATUS DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PAMDEMIC.
READY FOR SCHOOL HELPS PREPARE THE CHILDREN OF REFUGEES FOR KINDERGARTEN. FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, LITERACY CONNEXUS HAS PARTNERED WITH THE COOPERATIVE BAPTIST FELLOWSHIP TO PREPARE CHILDREN THROUGH READY FOR SCHOOL BASED ON GUIDELINES FROM THE FORT WORTH INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, THIS EARLY LEARNING PROGRAM TAKES PLACE IN APARTMENT COMPLEXES IN FORT WORTH WITH HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF REFUGEE FAMILIES. IN 2020, WE MODIFIED THIS PROGRAM TO PROVIDING RESOURCES TO CHILDREN VIRTUALLY AFTER SHUTDOWN IN MARCH.
