Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

ISLAND READERS & WRITERS' (IRW) MISSION IS TO INSPIRE A PASSION FOR READING AND LEARNING AMONG MAINE CHILDREN. OUR BOOK-BASED PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO STRETCH IMAGINATIONS, DEVELOP CRITICAL AND REFLECTIVE THINKING SKILLS, AND EXPAND PERSPECTIVES AND ASPIRATIONS THROUGH HANDS-ON LEARNING ABOUT NATURAL HISTORY, SCIENCE, LITERATURE, AND ART.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

IRW HAS THREE CORE PROGRAMS - ON-LINE, IN-SCHOOL AND IN-COMMUNITY. IRW PRESENTS IS AN ONLINE SERIES THAT BRINGS BOOK TALKS, PRESENTATIONS, INTERVIEWS AND WORKSHOPS TO TEACHERS, LIBRARIANS, PARENTS, AND ALL PEOPLE WHO LOVE CHILDREN'S BOOKS, WHEREVER THEY RESIDE. WE PARTNER WITH 26 SCHOOLS - (12) ON COASTAL ISLANDS AND (14) IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES IN WASHINGTON COUNTY TO BRING GREAT STORIES TO LIFE. WE WORK CLOSELY WITH MAINE AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS, SCIENTISTS, HISTORIANS, TEACHERS, SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, AND LOCAL VOLUNTEERS, TO ENSURE THAT OUR PROGRAMS MEET THE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF THE CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES WE SERVE. WE LEAD AND COLLABORATE WITH OTHERS IN BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES THAT SUPPORT AND VALUE CHILDREN READING AND LEARNING. WE PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO EDUCATORS AND INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS FOR EARLY LEARNERS USING THE WHOLE BOOK APPROACH AND VISUAL THINKING STRATEGIES TO EXPLORE HOW WORDS AND IMAGES COME TOGETHER TO TELL A STORY. IN 2020, IRW WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS WITH AN AWARD FOR LITERACY FOR "ITS EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF BEST PRACTICES IN LITERACY AND READING PROMOTION."
