THE FOUNDATION LAUNCHED ITS MENTOR PROGRAM IN FEBRUARY 2006 FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE AFFECTED BY THE INCARCERATION OF ONE OR BOTH OF THEIR PARENTS. THE FOUNDATION RECRUITS VOLUNTEERS FROM THE COMMUNITY, MATCHES THEM WITH ELIGIBLE CHILDREN, AND OFFERS ONGOING SUPPORT TO BOTH CHILDREN AND MENTORS. THE MENTORS PROVIDE STABLE, LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS FOR THE STUDENTS AND HELP THEM DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS SCHOOL. DURING THE 2021/2022 SCHOOL YEAR A TOTAL OF 470 CHILDREN (GRADES K-12) RECEIVED MENTORING IN 129 SCHOOLS. 50% OF THESE CHILDREN WERE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 36% WERE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND 14% WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL. 68% OF THE STUDENTS ATTENDED SCHOOLS IN AUSTIN. 94% OF THE CHILDREN MENTORED WERE CONSIDERED FINANCIALLY DISADVANTAGED AND 93% OF THE CHILDREN WERE HISPANIC, AFRICAN AMERICAN OR MULTI RACE.
