FARM FIELD STUDIES - IS AN ON-FARM EDUCATION PROGRAM WHOSE GOAL IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE FOOD SYSTEM, TEACH CONNECTIONS BETWEEN AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT, AND FOSTER INSPIRATION AROUND EATING HEALTHY FOODS. FARM FIELD STUDIES SERVED 1,748 K-12 STUDENTS FROM MARIN COUNTRY. ALL FARM VISITS FOR THIS PROGRAM TOOK PLACE ON MARIN COUNTY FARMS.
FARMING 101 - TEACHES BEGINNING FARMERS HANDS-ON SKILLS THROGH WORKSHOPS AND INTERNSHIPS. IN 2015, MARIN ORGANIC ORGANIZED SEVEN WORKSHOPS AND ONE INTERNSHIP WHICH PROVIDED VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT SOIL HEALTH, WATER MANAGEMENT, FINANCIAL SOLVENCY, AND OTHER RELEVANT TOPICS FOR BEGINNING FARMERS. FARMING 101 TOOK PLACE IN MARIN AND SONOMA COUNTIES.
PRODUCER MEMBER PROGRAM - MARIN ORGANIC HAS 40 MEMBER FARMS, RANCHES, AND FOOD ARTISANS THAT WE ARE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING. MARIN ORGANIC PROVIDES MARKETING AND ADVOCACY SUPPORT FOR LOCAL AGRICULTURE ON A WIDER SCALE.
OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE FOLLLOWING: SUPPORTING BUSINESS PROGRAM: ALLOWS RETAILERS TO JOIN MARIN ORGANIC AND BECOME PART OF A POWERFUL NETWORK OF LIKE-MINDED ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING LOCAL, ORGANIC FOOD TO CONSUMERS IN MARIN COUNTY AND BEYOND. COMMUNITY EVENTS: A SERIES OF EVENTS WHERE EXPERTS AND AUTHORS FROM THE FIELD OF ORGANIC AGRICULTURE PRESENT THEIR WORK TO AND ENGAGE IN DISCUSSION WITH THE PUBLIC. FOOD GLEANING/ACCESS: MARIN ORGANIC PARTNERS WITH LOCAL ORGANIC FARMS TO RECOVER FRESH PRODUCE THAT WOULD OTHERWISE GET TILLED UNDER OR COMPOSTED BECAUSE FARMERS WOULD NOT MAKE A PROFIT BY HARVESTING THIS FOOD. IN 2013 MARIN ORGANIC CONTRIBUTED OVER 10,000 POUNDS OF FRESH, ORGANIC PRODUCE TO THE SAN FRANCISCO/MARIN FOOD BANK AND LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES, HARVESTED BY VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF. MARIN ORGANIC ALSO MANAGES NATIONAL GLEANING DAY IN ORDER TO BROADEN THE SCOPE OF GLEANING AS A MEANS TO INCREASE FOOD SECURITY.
